Retarded Newbie Question Is tate on a LCD any good?
Is tate on a LCD any good?
I got a 19 inch Sharp Aquos and was wondering if I should bust it out the box and mount it on the wall TATE.
Anyone else Tate their LCD?
Considering its thinner then a CRT does the aspect ratio look off?
Was just curious, Sorry for the Stupid Newb question.

I mounted my 20" aquos w/ a rotating swivel. It was excellent... for the 3 480p games I had (Ikaruga, Shikigami no Shiro II, and Gigiwaing 2 which didn't need TATE).
The question is what will you be playing on it. Old games? That's like asking if shit tastes better with or without corn. The answer, is no, it will suck, either way you slice it (yoko or tate).

It's not an aquos, but my SyncMaster 204B has a pretty good viewing angle and yet when in portrait mode the colors will go off if you move even slightly to the right (towards the top), so when I used it in portrait/tate mode for MAME I ended up moving to the left of it, which isn't ideal.
If you're sitting right in front of it, 20" will give you a good picture if you're playing a vert/tate game boxed

Do any 360 games support TATE? You need to ask that question first. To my knowledge, Ikaruga does. I assume THE. You will definitely benefit from TATE'ing these games. No question.Segafan4life wrote: Xbox 360 hooked up component or VGA

I have 24 inch LG lcd monitor with pivot function that I modified to turn other way around because initially it was the wrong direction for some games like DDPDOJ. It has hdmi, component and vga inputs. The screen has 16:10 aspect ratio, but 480i/p through component it will be 4:3 with black bars.
It works ok, but the interlacing is visible especially in PS2 Ibara (I should try the progressive hack that was posted here a while ago). Mame also works fine. Dreamcast through VGA is bit tricky because there are limited aspect ratio options, but I can work around them.

Samsung 204T. It's 4x3 with a monster 1600x1200 resolution. It comes with a swivel stand for rotation and has 178 degree viewing angles so there is no image degradation no matter how the monitor is setup or where you are viewing it from (the 204B on the other hand has very poor 160 degree viewing angles).Segafan4life wrote:I need to find a 4:3 LCD that would probally be the safest bet. That way the Aspect ration is dead on.

If you want the best viewing setup the die-hard shmuppers use, try going with an analog CRT-based RGB monitor with a RGB cable setup: one only needs to extract five signals -- Red, Blue, Green, Sync, and Ground. Scan lines will be 100% accurate as well... ^_~
Once you try the above setup, going back to LCD makes it look like shit. But if you don't have any other alternative, then just stick with the LCD monitor setup you've got for now...

Hate to say it, but with a proper 4:3 LCD + XRGB2, the LCD can look better than an arcade monitor, which always have slight geometry and color convergence problems.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:Once you try the above setup, going back to LCD makes it look like shit.
Now when I say "proper", I mean a 4:3 lcd with 640x480 native resolution and 29" in size. Is there ever such a beast, no, but I'm still looking.

If you can get a signal out of your upscan converter (like 1600x1200, or the more common 1024xWhatever) that blurry software scaling problem (and the possible associated processing lag) goes away.Dave_K. wrote:Now when I say "proper", I mean a 4:3 lcd with 640x480 native resolution and 29" in size. Also, I've found that running games that are a certain refresh rate on a LCD screen with a higher refresh rate doesn't seem to pose any problem. 58 Hz games work well on a 60 Hz screen, and 60 Hz games work fine on a 62 Hz screen, at least in my view.

i have my 19 in. lcd mounted with a swivel arm so i can flip from yoko to tate with ease.....looks great to me....mame or consoles....will find out very soon how it looks with a supergun and pcb's
as for the resolution...i dunno...it might not look same as it would in arcades but the picture is crisp and clear and easy on the eyes.....i would recommend this setup if you dont have access to a PMV

Instantaneous crispness? How about persistent softness..? LCD is sharper than CRT pretty much by definition.serprex wrote:LCD hurts my eyes, I'm so use to the instantaneous crispness of CRT. LCD should be kept to the portable things
I will agree that LCD can be disconcerting on the eyes; I now run at a higher resolution than I used to and I'm getting some use out of my scroll wheel because Windows XP has a low default DPI setting which can't really be fixed for icons (this changes in Vista, but only specially designed icons - apparently vector images - scale properly in Vista). In any case, after using an LCD screen for about an hour I got used to it. I don't miss the flicker and other bad stuff that went with CRT; for demanding PC gaming I get higher resolutions but don't need to run at 85 Hz to get an acceptable image.
I thought LCD was hurting my eyes (as I've said many times, I thought I was going to go blind) when I first made the change on my primary workstation, but I got used to it within hours.

I would like to see that. Since LCDs in generally do not give as much clarity as a CRT, and there's a little (but some) signal loss when going through an XRGB. I know it's nitpicking, but that's what we do.Dave_K. wrote: Hate to say it, but with a proper 4:3 LCD + XRGB2, the LCD can look better than an arcade monitor, which always have slight geometry and color convergence problems.
As a new found convert to arcade monitors, I must admit, that I am simply amazed.

Just for posterity: i tate my laptop LCD clockwise, and similarly (but opposite) i have to look at it from the right if i want minimal color issues. And it's supposed to have a good viewing angle... Clearly no one ever thought ppl would tate laptop LCDs.
