Hey everyone, I'm a long-time lurker and first-time poster. I'm a big shmup fan from the SNES glory days and I've recently acquired about 9 gigs worth of shmups (PC and MAME) and well, my university productivity level has dropped quite a bit.
Anyway, I'm looking for a good stick for my computer (but I'm also looking forward to Ikaruga on XBLA, despite having it on DC already). I've seen some good and meh reviews on the Hori stick and it seems the X-Arcade Solo is the standard for this kind of stuff, but it's a little too expensive for me and it has too many features. Anything else out there I should consider?

Get the Hori stick for the 360. One, it's a lot closer to what most cabs will have, and two, unless you mod the X-Arcade stick or they decided to stop using really shitty parts at some point in the past few years it's not as high-quality as the marketing and price would have you believe.

It looks like many people don't consider that Hori to be that great. And it's apparently a bitch to mod, so I might be stuck with a junker for a while.
After some more research, this cheap thing and this thread offer a bit of DIY hope. I can get a custom stick for about the same price as the Hori after upgrades, etc. Is there a lot of soldering involved with this stuff, or is it pretty easy? I only have the most basic soldering skills.
what about the salubi? its pretty cheap and uses korean arcade grade parts ive heard nothing but good things about them so far . check play asia for them

I'm afraid overseas shipping will kill me. But the white one does look awesome.
Another question...is there a way to update MAMEUI by placing certain files, or do I have to reinstall every time a new version of MAME comes out? I don't know much about MAME or UI, so please bear with me.
got the HORI last night and it wont work with MAME. i google'd it and found some drivers, but havent gotten it working yet.....the stick is about the same as the tekken one as far as quality goes.
