Psychosis by Naxat.

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

Looks to be one of those unheard of shmups for the PC Engine. Is this game worth the points? I've never seen it mentioned here.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Why don't you just play it in an emulator and find out?

EDIT: That sounds kind of bad now that I reread it... I wasn't trying to threadshit, it was a genuine suggestion. Maybe I should have said something more along the lines of 'you could play it in an emulator to see if you like it' or something....

I'm not going to pay for an emulator.

:? There aren't any free PCE emulators out there?

E: I just found like ten of them in the first link of the most obvious search terms... I don't think I can post links on here, but it isn't hard to find one...

I paid for MagicEngine, it's really good. Although if you want to go shady all the way, you can probably find a crack for the trial version without too much difficulty.

I also paid something like only $2 for my Paranoia HuCARD, it's the JP version of Psychosis. Cheaper than any VC title. It's one of the two PCE HuCARDS that I kept from my massive collection purge.

I quite like it for the atmosphere, with backgrounds and enemy designs that will weird you out. It is a very hard memoriser though,

^^ I was reading a few articles about it and I saw that it was the only PCE HuCARD of it's size ever (6mb, don't know if it's actually true or not), I would have thought that alone would make it worth more than two dollars...

What's the other game that you kept?

Psychosis is an odd little game. It plays alright, and the graphics aren't too bad, but it's just... odd. Here's a review...

I doubt this is true. I don't feel like downloading and extracting the ROM at this very moment, but I don't recall it being that big, possibly not even 512 KB.

Coryoon. I have horrible taste, I know. Hey, it just occurred to me it's also by Naxat Soft.

Mednafen is an excellent little emulator. It runs PCE games very nicely, better than Magic Engine in my opinion. I'm not sure if it would run Psychosis, but it's certainly worth a shot.

You're right, it's less than 512, I don't know what that guy was talking about... do you know if the US, EU, & JP versions are different? The piece I read was referring to the turbografix version...

Seconded.. Mednafen is very good and will also run CD games. There's also TGEmu.

Its a cool horizontal and it can be challenging. Its kind of short, but you're supposed to loop it anyway.
PLus, its not too expensive either!
If you enjoy PC-Engine/TG-16 shmups, you should get the game period.

Every time I've played it I've ended up quite frustrated, but when a shmup is hard enough that I have difficulty finishing the 1st stage, it's not a game I go back to regularly. However, the atmosphere keeps me coming back occasionally. I need to pick this one up for my TG-16 at some point...

That's exactly what Virtual Console is.

I wasn't going to say anything about it, lol...

Pixel_Outlaw, have you played the game yet? If you have, what did you think about it?

Possibly thirded. Thanks for the link. I'd been using this one emulator, I forget what it was called now. It seemed a good deal old though.

Paranoia is awesome.

PCE/TG-16 ver. of Raiden Hu-Card weighs in at 6MB...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

You might not know this but on the back of the NEC TurboGrafx-16 branded Raiden factory box, it states that it's a 6 megabit Hu-Card...

The PCE Hu-Card of Paranoia has some very interesting artwork -- can't say that of the USA release of Psychosis Hu-Card though...

But do you know why? I mean, there's no way Raiden is that big, is there?

The Genesis version is 8Mb, so it's very possible for the TG-16 one to be 6Mb.

Unless NEC got their facts wrong on the Raiden Hu-Card cart size, it's been settled then...

I like it. It's a bit R-typeish with colorful visuals and decent music. I haven't played it in a while though.
