Not as nerdy as those where this one dude started to talk about STORYLINES of Gradius or R-Type or whatever it was. That is nerdy and doesn´t even fit into the most un-nerdy videogame genre that exist.MX7 wrote:Probably the nerdiest thread ever made.
I say un-nerdy because it doesn´t get people to write retarded fanfiction and discuss endlessly about hypothetical battles between ficitional characters, and it also doesn´t involve orcs and nightelves and all this shit. Although games like Mushihime made shmups a lot nerdier than before (not talking about the T&A in itself but the way it makes fans of this game look like premature teenagers), not even counting these ultra-lame witch themes in doujins.
*cough*
Force field, though I thought LIMIT and GUARD in Gaiden were very nifty, too.

I like talking about game storylines. Blame it on a lifetime of reading literature.
Aside from the G3 SNES players with their reduce, everyone's going to say force field. Everyone but me, 'cause I'm a MAN and shield is the manliest power-up there is. The shield is no less than your balls, and by activating it you're putting your balls out there to get wailed on my lasers and missiles and that diamond shit Gradius enemies always shoot. That's hardcore.

You can bet your life on the claim that something as redundant as shmups are being played mainly by nerds. The recent rise of the abstract-shooter thing is nerdy as hell. Then there is the whole score-system nerdiness - especially when it comes to Cave games (Let's face it, Cave games are geared towards nerds). Not to mention the heavy-metal guitar riff nerdiness prevalent in many soundtracks.FrederikJurk wrote:That is nerdy and doesn´t even fit into the most un-nerdy videogame genre that exist.
I see a trend where nerds are taking over the whole shmups business.
It is powerup of laser.

Force field as others above stated, otherwise reduce, smaller target to hit is always better.

I'm an old timer, been visiting Shmups for 9 years since Feb '99, my username was Kosh_H. Back then, his username was Rommel (MX7 and frederik may already know what I'm about to talk about) He kept posting these bizzarre threads asking things like "Why do you think the people in Darius couldn't make peace with the aliens?" (seriously, that is an actual example) We mainly ignored him but months later (August '99 IIRC) someone finally made fun of him for the weird posts and he went nuts spamming the message board from top to bottom with NT posts of "Shmups sucks!!!!" ect. This made the board unreadable for at least a week. Akira almost lost it and Malc (still a frequent poster at the time) almost deleted the board. It was just a crummy old unregistered spyware vulnerable BB so there was nothing anyone could do. So I find it eerily amusing whenever I see a Trekkie style "shooter story" speculation topic pop up here now and then.MX7 wrote:Ha ha, I remember that guy. Anyone else here remember that? I also remember Turbo Ted who would post threads saying he'd snuck into SCEJ HQ and seen Axelay 2 running on the PS2. haha And "Spamperoo Billy" who claimed to enjoy playing RS while dancing to Ricky Martin. lol Sad I remember all this. I have become the historian of insanity for the site.
So anyways....force field all the way for reasons already mentioned.
