Bosconian?

Post by Pixel_Outlaw »

Just wondering who here enjoys Bosconian, it is probably my favorite older shmup. I would rather slam my weener in a door than play the other early shooting gallery shmups. I like it because you have actual multi axis movement which was rare at the time and the playing field was quite large. Also you shot out your bottom too which was cool.

No, this game is not Space Invaders.

I'm not a big fan of bosconian, but probably because I discovered this (http://olofson.net/kobodl/) before I ever played bosconian. It's an enhanced version that is quite fun (and damned difficult in the higher stages).

Edit - I never played "Kobo Deluxe". I played "XKobo", the game this was based off of.

Guess I'll have to download this now.

I too have played that game, you are right in some ways it is better than Bosconian.

But not when it comes to gameplay...

Bosconian has that early eighties "arcade smartness". It's short, fast, focused AND it's got speech. In one word: Intense.
It is powerup of laser.

Yeah, Bosconian still plays surprisingly well. I've ben fooling around with it on the Namco Battle Collection for PSP. I typically am not a fan of 360 degree shooters but this one is pretty fun. Challenging, but never frustrating, and yes, very intense.

I actually never saw a Bosconian machine in the wild, and was introduced to the game when I imported the original release of the PS1 Namco Museum disc from japan. Bosconian was one of the featured games on that initial collection, and it included a virtual 3D museum, and a game room themed around Bosconian, that you could walk around and sit down at an authentic Bosconian arcade machine to play. I remember being fascinated to experience all that for a game I'd never heard of before at the time (I just imported the collection for Galaga :) ).

Now I think I'd like to see an upgraded version of that Namco VR retrogaming museum released inside the VR world of Playstation Home. They could introduce a whole new generation of gamers to the obscure moderate fun of Bosconian. :)

I guess you guys should try the sequel, which is Blast Off. Maybe it should be called "Brrast Off!"
