My girl blew up my dreamcast!

Post by Marc »

I'm at work last Friday, and I get a message on my phone, 'can you ring me at home please'.

So I do, and my giel picks up, explaining to me that she can't get the DC to work. She'd started a 'game' of Seaman the week before and was absolutely fascinated by it. So I ask her are there any symptoms, and she says 'well, there was a loud bang and a cloud of white smoke...', all casual, as you do.

The dozy mare has forgotten to use my step-down and only gone and plugged the power lead from our Xbox straight into the back of my JPN PINK HELLO KITTY DC! One of the few rarities I managed to keep hold of when I started to sell off my stuff, and she fuckin' blows it up

Dammit, I love her but sometimes...

Can ayone in the know tell me (as I suppose) if it's beyond repair? Opened it up and there seem to be tiny patches of a very viscous yellow liquid on some of the boards - dunno what the hell this is but I haven't spilled anything in there?

Still, my bro's giving me a black US Sports console, so at least I still get my Giga Wing 2 fix.

The viscous yellow liquid is probably electrolytic capacitor squeezins. Mmmm....toasty. Go buy another DC of the same hardware revision, swap the guts.

Black sports Dreamcast? is that the R7 Model variant? thats damn rare and highly sought after, I'd never part with one of those. Don't let it get damaged its a work of art.

No, the irony of it is that I had one of those as well. When I had to let one of them go a few months ago, it was the girl I was with previous to this one that convinced me to sell the R7 and keep the Hello Kitty.

So my ex made me get rid of the nicer of the models, and my new one blew the other up.

Heh, when I saw the title of this topic I pictured some gal pushing down a Wile E. Coyote-esque TNT plunger, upon which the Dc flies into the air and erupts into a 4th of July fireworks display...all with the "1812 Overture" playing in the background, of course. Least it woulda been more impressive, heh. But seriously, sorry to hear that.

Hopefully all you need to replace is the power supply. >_<

You blew the electrolytic capacitors on the power supply board. Make sure the yellow acid didn't get onto the CD drive PCB or the main motherboard.

Just order a universal power supply replacement board (which you probably should have done in the first place ya dope. :D )

Last year, my roommate stepped on my Dreamcast and broke it. I'd only had it for about 2 months. He lied to me and told me that he didn't know what happened, and then eventually broke down and gave me $30 to buy a new one because he wanted to play Rival Schools 2 again. I took his $30 and sold my copy of Rival Schools 2 to spite him and never got a new one. It was great.

Coincidentally, I constantly step on my new roommate's Gamecube. I haven't broken it yet though.

Noooooooooo! These dreamcast death stories are too hard to take. If i knew which part of the dreamcast console controlled region detection I could probably repair some with my existing parts from pal consoles, mother boards etc. I'm proud to have saved a few dreamcasts and keep an original sealed in my collection cupboard.

Sold an R7...........kept hello kitty.

You get the 'five finger discount?' omfgtheif. Next thing you'll know you'll be doing something like emulation.

Mine is pimp because I installed a modchip. It was easy as hell, but some people think soldering 4 points is rocket science for whatever reason, so it has a higher resale value.

Tell me about it. @go on, keep the pink one, I like that one, pleeeeaaasee....'

An a month after that, I'm not with her anymore. Between my ex and my new girl, they've stolen my sanity, emptied my wallet, and even the games collection is slowly slipping away... why do we do it...

Why are your girlfriends making you sell these items?

When you've gone from EX girl to next girl the dreamcast will always be there for you :)

Hot Shmup action is one type no girl can give, in theory if she bought a replacement with border down that could count.

Marc, you'd have my sympathy, if it weren't for the little detail that Hello Kitty SUCKS! It is meant for teenage girls and flamboyant rave-going homos! Go get a MAN'S Dreamcast, wuss!!!

I hear that. My Saturn is doing that right now. You know that one of these times you are going to boot it up to play and it will just be gone, and you'll be out of luck.

It's Russian Roulette trying to get my Dreamcast to work. Sometimes it works perfectly -- I only had one problem while playing Grandia II a few weeks back, and my Dreamcast was getting more play than it had in years -- other times I'll spend a half hour trying to get the disk to even spin.

Someday, I'll buy a new, modded Dreamcast, so I can stop both the constant uncertainty of whether it'll work, and the annoyance of the damned bootdisk.

Dreamcast's don't seem to be built quite as sturdily as some other systems.

I've taken good care of mine ever since I bought it back in Fall 01'. Got it with a copy of Project Justice! (The Dreamcast version was Rival Schools 3, not 2), Virtua Tennis, an extra transparent blue controller, and the last copy of Raycrisis (yeah, yeah, that's a PSX title, but it was only $14.99!). Turned out to be around close to $180-ish...

It got modded around seven months later, and is still working to this day (with the occasinal cleaning, of course), without any problems. Now if I only bought one of those clear cases they were selling awhile back for it.

They aren't as such. But after splitting with my ex and loosing a full-time wage, trying to keep hold of my house, and then taking on a new girl that as of yet doesn't have a job, I need cash. And the collection is the only way around it

 I hear ya. Annoying thing is, a year ago I had four DC's - white PAL, black US Sega Sports, an R7 and the Hello Kitty. Gave the sports one to my bro, the PAL to a friend, and sold the R7 when money started getting tight. Left only with a (dead) Hello Kitty for my trouble. One day, I'll get back on my feet and purchase one of those beautiful silver models...[/quote]

Many moons ago after my own fiasco with a no-job, free-loading biatch, I made it a rule to only be involved with financially independent women. And it's worked ever since. I refuse to be tethered to some woman leeching off of me like some parasite.

Maybe I should get into this "Dreamcast" you guys speak of. I am sick of current consoles' games and making a commitment to play old school stuff. Say I were to buy a used DC at a Gamestop, what games would you recommend?

I'll Start the Best Dreamcast thread a little later this evening , Think I have well over 150 dc games played and in collection so I'm qualified to comment :D

I'll group em into fighters, rpgs, racing etc and I'll need help with 2D fighters as Not the biggest fan of em, but i did acquire about 10 of em.

If you Buy a dreamcast aside from the shmups heres some of what you should buy:

Shenmue 1 and 2
soul calibur
metropolis street racer
Rez
quake 3
marvel vs capcom 2
Grandia 2
Skies of Arcadia
star lancer
Phantasy star online but maybe not anymore as online comunity nearly gone.

Thats all 10 out of 10 can't go wrong.

Dreamcast games are pretty cheap on ebay these days seldom over 20 quid. bar the obvious ones.
