Mountain of Faith is a well-made doujin shmup, 10th official game by Team Shanghai Alice, which actually consists of one Japanese person named ZUN. Its difficulty is pretty forgiving (even more so than in the earlier titles), and the scoring system is greatly simplified, which some might like (I don't). The latter is based on item chaining this time.

Read more on the game's mechanics in the Touhou wiki:
http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Mountain_of_Faith
The WR table can be found there as well:
http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/High_scor ... 9.8C.B2.29

Rules:

one credit only (the score must have 0 as its last digit);
no frame drop rates over 5% (this is to ensure no slowdown has been used to an unfair advantage);
full version only;
— since the patch is definitely not coming, and the difference in score is not critically advantageous, Marisa-B is now allowed;
replay files are required for #1 scores (see note #2).

Format to submit scores in:
Code:
name - score - stage - character - framedrop%

Example:
Code:
John Doe - 234,623,230 - 6 - Reimu-C - 0.8%

Top scores:

Easy: atsumu — 1,489,791,240 — Reimu-C (replay).

Normal: Nereid — 1,636,932,500 — Reimu-C (former WR score, replay).

Hard: atsumu — 1,677,684,670 — Reimu-B (replay).

Lunatic: .ASP — 1,997,478,960 — Reimu-A (replay).

Extra: Nereid — 966,295,350 — Reimu-B (replay).

Notes:

1. I will include world records for the sake of comparison. They will not be an active part of the local scoreboard, although I will update them as well as the local scores. They can all be gotten here.

2. I require a replay for the new #1 scores just because it's very easy to save replays (laughably easy compared to setting a new record). I will not require replays for other scores, but it's good if you post them. Don't post proofpics, as they clutter the thread needlessly, and provide no advantages over a replay file.

Free Touhou replay uploaders:
http://replays.gensokyo.org/
http://replay.royalflare.net/

3. Although very rarely, MoF may desync, usually on stage 4. This can often be fixed by playing replay back from stage 3 while holding down the ctrl button (fastforward) all the way through the desynching parts. If this doesn't help, the replay is likely broken beyond repair.

4. A reminder: Reimu is the red-white priestess chick, Marisa is the black-white witch chick.
Reimu-A shoots homing amulet cards, Reimu-B shoots a very narrow barrage of high speed projectiles, Reimu-C has widely spread-out options shooting straight ahead that become a widening pink spread when focused. Marisa-A has Gradius-style tracing options, Marisa-B shoots piercing lasers, Marisa-C has detachable flamethrower-like options.
A rule of thumb is: general firepower increases from A to C, while ease of use decreases accordingly. This doesn't mean a top score is unachievable with either of them, it's much more of a matter of personal preference (the characters are, in fact, quite nicely balanced).

5. The game isn't freeware. Which means you'll have either to buy it, lend, or leech off the internet. Paletweb sells the game for $17.99, which is quite a nice price for a still relatively new game. As for leeching, search google for doujinstyle or go ask your favorite torrent trackers. (And be prosecutedt to the full extent of the jam™.)

My replays for the table above: Easy, Normal, Hard, Extra.
Everything except Normal is more of placeholder, I'm going to improve them soon.

12th, actually. You're forgetting STB and IaMP.

I'm not forgetting them. The end titles say: "10th Project Shrine Maiden".

Also, new Easy score:
moozooh — 527,963,300 — ALL — Reimu-A — 0.0% — 1.00a (replay).

Captured all spellcards except the last two (which is a pity, cause they're not really hard at all), but managed to somehow die in a couple places (twice in stage 5 for instance, that was pretty shameful). Also, messed up item chain in a few places. Overall, around ~700M should be achievable.

I posted the link for a reason. All Japanese records end up there, partly because most of them are made by the same bunch of superplayers. It's not hard to see they actually are WRs — just look at how polished they are, especially the Extra mode run.

I'm dead tired, so here's another shitty easy mode run:

moozooh — 566,870,060 — ALL — Reimu-A — 0.0% — 1.00a (replay).

Still many deaths and three failed spellcards.

I almost forgot I had this game. Thanks for making me drag it out. MoF is fun and has pretty graphics, though hitboxes feel a bit wonky at times.

easy:
zdk — 723,592,940 — ALL — Reimu-A — 0.1% — 1.00a (replay)
is it just me, or is mountain of faith (last spell card) more annoying on easy than normal? the bullets move slower, are harder to read, and stay on the screen a long time. I'll try to improve this one.

normal:
zdk — 440,909,580 — ALL — Reimu-B — 0.1% — 1.00a (replay)
captured mountain of faith at least. several silly deaths and bombs from not being as familiar with this game.

still working on a hard 1cc. was going well until I faceplanted into aya's bullets multiple times.

edit:
moozooh, one thing I noticed, at least in your normal replay, was that you don't use focus to collect items. focusing lets you collect items from a lot further away (like a magnet), so you don't have to dart back and forth so much to grab items. safer, and easier to keep up the faith meter.

Thanks, and good going with the scores! I need to revise my strategy for Easy mode, my chaining and faith harvesting should be improved by a lot.

Are you going to tackle Extra?

I kinda didn't realize it was focusing that made items gravitate towards me from further away. >_> Thanks.

[EDIT]
By the way, I've noticed that in some pro replays there's a Faith gauge appearing over the head of the character. Does anyone know how to trigger it in normal play?

Also, a somewhat better Hard mode score:

moozooh — 198,504,640 — 4 — Reimu-A — 0.0% — 1.00a (replay).
(I still died at the last spellcard of stage 4.)

For the faith counter thing, go to the Custom program, and click on the second option. It'll activate it.

P.S: Does Grazing even do anything anymore?

I'm going to take you on the hard list soon.
got to stage 6 beginning, 220mil-ish.
massive lol moment at stage 5 last non-spell card. I have just over one power and i get stuck to the side, so only one homing bullet is actually hitting sanae. I'm just flying in these tiny little circles for about a minute while her health goes down by millimeters :P. I might post that replay just because its funny.

a lot of silly deaths before stage 4. I should probably just bomb more, since MoF doesn't seem to discourage that as much as the other games, whereas dying hurts your score massively.
I'll post when I get the 1cc, shouldn't be too far off now.

also, thanks for the hint to activate the faith counter.

grazing makes a nice ticking sound and shoots out some sparks. other than that it does absolutely nothing, heh

Meanwhile, I'll be taking back the Easy board soon. :)

moozooh — 659,765,450 — ALL — Reimu-A — 0.0% — 1.00a (replay).
Died twice, IIRC, but only one less death would have given me about 740-750 mil as a result. I guess I should be shooting (yeah, pun) for ~850-900 mil no-miss clear. A_Civilian, thanks for the heads up on the faith gauge!

so something like this you mean :P
all the touhou easy lists will be mine forever!!
zdk — 951,223,840 — ALL — Reimu-A — 0.1% — 1.00a (replay)
for some reason I can't capture those last two spells on easy....The second to last i really should be able to do.
not dropping faith at a few places, and of course capturing the last two spells i think i can break 1 billion after some tries.

hard mode is not yielding, I keep on flubbing, way too many times either dying or being forced to bomb in stage 4. grrrr.... I also have a really short attention span and can't stand more than 2 tries at a time or so. I should probably just dive into practice mode and figure out strategies.
extra mode will fall once I buckle down and actually start memorizing things. at least the non-SC attacks don't turn ludicrously harder than the actual spells as the match goes on, like in IN extra.

Oh damn you to hell!

Updated, though. :P

[EDIT]
Also, an attempt at Lunatic that went a little better than I expected:

moozooh — 95,066,500 — 4 — Reimu-A — 0.2% — 1.00a (replay).

A lot of somewhat impressive fluke moments but nothing groundbreaking overall. This is the first Touhou game that let me go up to stage 4 on Lunatic (all the others thwarted my attempts completely at second stage, third at max) without forcing me to do something completely outrageous. It's funny though, I still haven't managed to pass stage 4 on Hard, either. :\

And oh no, I'm definitely not going to give up the Easy board.

moozooh — 810,467,030 — ALL — Reimu-A — 0.1% — 1.00a (replay).

That's with TWO deaths. A billion is 100% achievable at this level, in fact this very playthrough would have made it if not for said deaths. Also, it contains a good strategy to capture the second-to-last spellcard.

Ninja attack! Instead of Easy, I'm taking back the Normal mode!

moozooh — 743,677,190 — ALL — Reimu-A — 0.0% — 1.00a (replay).

Kanako's last two spellcards (which I agree are less annoying on Normal) and Aya's survival card captured here, heheh.

[EDIT]
A shitty try on Extra, but a new score nonetheless:

moozooh — 382,805,680 — ALL — Reimu-A — 0.0% — 1.00a (replay).

That was underhanded, but I accept your challenge!
no new scores yet, but I spent a bunch of time in practice mode developing better stage strategies (especially stage 4, where I usually lose massive amounts of faith). On that note, i just realized that capturing aya's survival card actually decreases your faith meter.....what!? . aya's survival card is pretty simple though, just hug the wall, half the attack misses you heh.
expect something before the night is over!

Yes, it's because your faith automatically decreases by 30,000 points when you timeout a spellcard. Same thing happens on Extra, perhaps because ZUN must really release a patch or something. >_>

well, not as if marisa-B by herself doesn't warrant a patch.

also bloody @&$%(!!!
had a pretty near perfect easy run, then bombed on the knife card, second last card, then DIED on the last card....That was sad...
I had nearly 900k faith going into the final boss,
it would be nice to be able to switch to reimu B for just that last card.

I have a better strategy for the knife card, and can capture the last card 1/4-1/3 now, but not, it seems, at the end of a run...
I will break 1 billion!

Heh, I know what you mean. I nearly captured it this time too, but got nervous and bombed where shouldn't have. Apart from that, two deaths again (wtf), one of which — the one in stage 4 — robbed me of my billion. :| Still, I'm coming very close even with that.

moozooh — 865,255,620 — ALL — Reimu-A — 0.0% — 1.00a (replay).

I noticed that the replay desyncs in stage 4 (a very desync-prone stage, I should say) far before the actual death, but I estimate that I lost around ~140,000+ worth of faith on it, which would have put me with ~950 against Kanako. I think it might be possible for me to get up to 999,990 right before her (obviously I'll lose a few thousands on the long wait, though), which will secure a billion.

Yeah, this game really needs a patch. I can't bring myself to play it for too long because I just know my replays are going to be invalidated someday. I probably won't play this game again until then, unless it's to try to clear Extra.

I think the proper phrase here is "hell yeah!"

zdk — 1,127,127,460 — ALL — Reimu-A — 0.0% — 1.00a (replay).
I drop faith at a few places, which cost a pretty good amount of faith (~30k over the run I think). I'm pretty happy with this one though.
all cards captured except mountain of faith and hina's (2nd stage) midboss card. apparently, bombing the crap out of that card spawns extra fairy waves that drop large faith items.
A lot more bombing for faith, though I think a bunch of those didn't actually help (stage 2 and 4).
also, having full power at the end of the knife card and second last card is key. Those powered up blue items are worth about 60-70mil, more than the actual cards. a really close call during the knife card when my finger slipped, major adrenaline spike there :P
I think I'm going to try for a hard 1cc now.

Congrats, man! I'll be sure to catch up by the end of the week, though. :D

[EDIT]
A somewhat better Extra score:

moozooh — 503,712,660 — ALL — Reimu-A — 0.0% — 1.00a (replay).

I'm nearing my limit on this one. Not sure if I'll be able to get over ~650 millions.

Looks like we'll be the only two active posters here. :D

[EDIT2]
Not a hiscore, but I've managed to rack up almost 700 millions on Easy with four (yes, four) deaths! Which makes me wonder about my playing standards, and also the fact if dying is as bad as it is advertised to be. As it seems to me now, one death results in about 100-150 millions lost by the end of the game, and where you die it doesn't matter considerably because the loss in Faith at later stages is more-or-less balanced out by having much less items left to collect.

A meager improvement on Normal:

moozooh — 752,567,730 — ALL — Reimu-A — 0.0% — 1.00a (replay).

Can't believe I died twice where I did, it's not even a hard card to capture to begin with. :\ Also, somewhat fascinating last spellcard capture.

Oh DAMN it, I can't believe I blew a 1.1+ billion replay just now. Everything was close to perfect until Kanako's first spellcard. Damn.

moozooh — 945,424,960 — ALL — Reimu-A — 0.0% — 1.00a (replay).

Now right after I get a billion, I'm going to change my character of choice to Marisa-C. I'm getting sick of spellcards taking up forever and getting me killed on the last two seconds.

I had the same idea. also, there are a bunch of places where you can just camp the top of the screen by leaving the options on opposite sides.

sorry about the run, your stage 1, 2 strategies are better than mine were. I think that would have been close to 1.2 otherwise.

my lack of score posting is mainly due to second semester starting up. I also entered an AI competition of sorts, controlling teams of autonomous (virtual) robots in an RTS like game.
don't worry though, I will be coming after you when I have time.
