Ego question - my shmup abilities

Post by captain ahar »

i apologize in advance for the absolute vanity of this post.

for an average player with Gradius 3 (arc) on normal, how is getting to the boss of stage 3 as a current best? as far as getting further, its a bit of a pain to play through the first three stages just so i can get to him and practice. but i can't complain, stupid fun when i am in the mood. :D

EDIT: now i feel like a complete idiot (as i should), but i'll leave the question up as a testament to that... and also if you feel like answering. :?

emulators + me = no  the only point at which i see myself emulating is when i get into the arcade scene and i want to make dead sure a game is going to be worth the hundreds of dollars.

and besides, i don't have a computer to run that sort of thing on.

Seems about average, I've always been an average shmup player too.

Shmups where you don't instantly continue where you die used to give me trouble to no end. Especially the Gradius, Toaplan and Rtype games.

The worst part of those games has always been that if you die and lose your powerups, you're screwed, so if you don't beat the bloody things on one life, you have a heck of a time.

I think on average per Rtype/Gradius/Toaplan game I usually get this far on 1 credit.

Rtype Level 3
Gradius Level 3 boss or 4 boss
Toaplan Level 3 or 3 boss

Gradius 3 arcade woops me. On the JP version, I can't pass level 2. On the US version, I've made it to around level 4 or 5 once. Usually don't make it past level 3's boss.

There's just something uniquely difficult about that game. I have 1LC'd parts 1, 2, and 5. But 3 just destroys me.

how does the PS2 difficulty settings compare to the arcade releases (jp and us)?

anyway, love gradius 3 (even though i can't get close to the Mark III boss again ). gradius 4 i won't play again for awhile. its so boring when i have 3, 5, and Gaiden to keep me company.

also finally beat the Maoi stage in Gaiden, and got to the boss of the Organic Fortress but didn't beat him (might i just say, if i die in this game, i am happy to do it here... so many power-ups to recover with).

awhile back i made a really stupid topic post saying i had cleared G5 on very easy using 6 credits (wow, good for me). anyway, started playing this on normal and i am a big cheater. it is big fun now. that is all.

one more thing. Jade Knight rules.

No shame there mate- IMO these are two of the hardest MD shooters ever! I recently played Truxton again after what seemed like eons as i'd seen the high score thread and could'nt remember just how hard it was...biiiiiig mistake! It took me all afternoon to get to stage-bloody-3 whereupon i recieved what can only be described as a grade-A spanking!

Don't even get me started on Hellfire...
