Ok, we had a pretty juicy thread going on the last forum, including some nice pictures from 81 and a dramatic search which led to a no-sale from whoever was renting the PCB to Try Amusment Tower.
For those of you not aware of the dealio:
Cave held a high score contest after the release of DDP for the Saturn. The winner was awarded a one of a kind PCB "Campaign Version" of DDP. This was advertized on their website and on a little card that came with the original release of DDP for the Saturn. As highly adverstized as this event was, it's strange that they would not give any details on the grand prize. I guess that makes it that much more awesome of a prize, by the fact that nobody had any clue as to how special it actually was.
Just wanted to get the thread going again, as it's one of those legends that burns in the hearts of Cave fanboys, world-wide
the replay video has been availlable on the FTP server mentioned here in January, and now is availlable via Icarus´ Bittorrent tracker. Actually, there were two versions on the FTP, one with pretty bad picture quality, and one with two runs in good quality. Availlable via torrent is only the good one.
So it looks like I'll be joining Greg and his wife on a trip to Japan here in a few weeks and I was wondering if anybody knows the current location of the DDP Campaign ver? Still at Daytona game center in Saitama? It sure would cap off my Japan trip to play this legendary title

I must have sensed your mojo on this UD, as just this morning I was looking through my DDP replays, and re-watched the Campaign version superplays. I thought to myself, wouldn't it be cool if Cave released the roms, or at least released a true DDP trilogy port for PS2. I'd love to reburn those eproms and play Campaign Ver. on my PCB.
Regarding the gameplay of Campaign Ver., they definately increased the difficulty of the first loop, with extra enemys and what looks like denser patterns in some spots. And that pre-hyper system doesn't really help kill things faster, only speed up the combo meter for crazy high scores.
"It's kinda like with Progear, there are only so many copies in the world, not everyone can play it unless it's emulated"
Sorry to take this off topicish but not sure I agree with this; Progear boards come up quite regularly on forums and are almost always on offer at PCB sellers.
There is only one copy of Campaign version so I hardly anyone can play it unless its emulated!
I think: if it was emulated or released for consoles or even on PCB, it woul'd lose its value of especiality that was the prize for the contest winner. The release of the game woul'd be a lack of respect for the winner of the contest, and Cave woul'd blacken its image... It's good that they had principles toward the winner, letting him decide what use make of his trophy, losing the potential sells of a collection item like this in the name of respect.

Since there is only 1 board released, I don't see how this will "blacken" Cave's image. At least Cave could do a limited release of Campaign version like the Black Lablel PCB's.

i agree.
the board was never "released" per se.. its a prize, just like the ikaruga winner got trophys.. i dont think treasure should start selling iky-trophycopies?
the destruction of everything, is the beginning of something new. your whole world is on fire, and soon, you'll be too..
I'de like to see CAVE do another release where you have to score so many points in the prequel in order to be allegible to buy the "limited edition" label of a game.
For example, you need 400m in Ketsui to buy Ketsui Black Label.
My personal opinion is that th roms ont he board souhdl be dumped. maybe not shared publically but at least dumpe.d boards don' last forever, you know..
So if a fellow shmupper were to own (or at the very least. have access to one) a Cave Dodonpachi PCB, a plain "vanilla" (meaning unmodified) DDP PCB could techincally be converted into a Special Campaign Version DDP right?
I do have one of those so-called plain "vanilla" DDP PCBs myself. ^_~
For Undamned,
I can get your DDP Superplay videos converted to DVD if you want. Just shoot me a PM and we can go on from there. ^_~

Only with the Campaign Roms, which will never be released.

I think you, VALGAR, shoul'd hope they didn't do it: otherwise you will probably find yourself in a Nepal temple playing Ketsui from dusk till dawn without even eating or sleeping

sven666 wrote:so UD.. did you get a chance to see this badboy in action on your nippon visit???
Good question. Did someone ever managed to play it?
I do recall on the last Shmups.com site before it "went down in flames"...that a fellow shmupper by the name of Eight One tried out this famed DDP Campaign Version PCB at the Try Tower when it was rented out to them courtesy of NAI himself. There were even some posted JPEGs of it in action and even described the various differences of it compared to a regular DDP PCB. It has since been returned to him for safekeeping purposes.
And would Cave allow such a DDP Campaign Version "Rom Dump" to be possible for other DDP PCB owners to enjoy? The answer is legally, no. And if NAI should ever decide to sell his one and only existing PCB of this peculiar DDP Campaign Version PCB...he could reap a "king's ransom" indeed given the legendary cult status that DDP PCB has gained amongst hard-core shmup PCB hobbyists. ^_~
