Star Soldier...

Post by Harlequin »

Anyone give me some advice if this is worth picking up?

There are a few versions, was it ever an arcade game?

There's an article over on HG101. I haven't played enough of the game to have a meaningful opinion. I didn't like Super Star Soldier, though, and Final Soldier was mediocre.

No coin-op, although it was somewhat derived from the NES/famicom version of the Tehkan coin-op shooter "Star Force"! Tehkan licensed the SF game for famicom to Hudson and after great sales success Hudson built their own sequel "Star Soldier". That version for famicom also enjoyed great success hence more sequels and inclusion and creation of the Summer "Caravan" promotional shows!

Start with the famicom version as this is the best thing to do if you are interested in Star Soldier!

If you prefer the score them up style of modern shooting game, then Star Soldier will most likely not suit your taste.

Star Soldier is old style game from the olden days.

However for quick 2 minute scoring play, it is offer caravan mode.

I just played some SSS the other day, actually. I always find myself appreciating the game for a new reason every time I play it; but this time it was because I realized it was the "safest - bet" for enjoyability through the ages...Basically, you "get-in" hauling ass, then you just have a nice calm, peaceful "hosing" pattern throughout the first level. That all changes after a few minutes, then you're subtley asked to "speed-down" here and there - esp. the little ring-shaped mid-boss thingy. So typically PC Engine; lots of demand for tactfulness. Not to mention a huge jump from the original. I'd have to disagree w/ you about SSS. I actually find it more interesting than FS - which was waaaay too easy. I loved the music in FS, though - maybe just a little more than SSS.

I guess what threw me off was the system where sometimes you'd instantly respawn, and sometimes be sent back to a checkpoint.

My favorite Hudson vert is actually Vertical Force.

Yeah, it was unorthodox cause you kind of had to "earn" that right (to respawn instantly) by setting off "smart bombs" by getting same color while full power (indicated by orange glowing reference ship in the lower right corner); otherwise you'd start over. Perhaps that system could work these days if there were something to clarify it for the player, i.e. small text or something. I'd usually switch from red to green weapons. The 9 ship limit used to bother me a lot. I think it's kind of awesome now. Still, I've not yet beaten SSS - believe it or not.

I wish there was a way to play VF w/o the VB. I remember beating that game one morning (after staying up all night playing it...heh). The music is incredible.

Can't believe I got rid of my VB. :(

But, I held on to VF!!! :)
