T-zero AMIGA shmup

Post by ST Dragon »

Anybody played this:

http://www.amigachapterone.com/amiga/t-zer0.htm

I bet it needs a meaty amiga to play.

I have played it, only a couple of times though as it was on my friends computer.. I don't remember anything about the gameplay, but I do remember that the graphics were stunning. Yea it requires a Amiga with some expansion stuff, I bet very few have actually played the game considering it was one of the last commercial ones made (and the fact that it required expansioncards and will not run on any emulators).

I think the site says it can run on an emulator without problems using the specific A4000 setup they list. I wonder if it can run w/RTG though, or if it's AGA only.

From the official site the requirements are:

AGA, 8mb Ram, 030, CDROM

Specs:
50fps, transparencies, insane number of sprites, cdmusic.

"Does it support gfx cards: No it is AGA only"

Emulating AGA is very slow on current emulators, so even if the game would run it would probably be far from smooth. Then unfortunately the game also uses all kinds of hardware trickery, so graphics glitches would be very likely. And I wonder if the CD music would work too?.

Anyway there is a demo that can be downloaded from their site:
http://www.clickboom.com/t0/download.shtml

aybe it is worth trying it with an emulator and see how it runs :)

I dunno, my machine plays AGA games silky smooth in emulation, even stuff like Genetic Species.

Yes, Winuae runs AGA games well for some time now.

From what i hear, T-ZEro is more a techinical demo than a game, as it's not all that good. Also, I heard the game is very unstable and crash a lot.

It was published by Clickboom if I remember correctly, and this alone is a very good reason to forget this game all together.

Clickboom were some of the biggest dorks ever in gaming history.

I bought a copy off ebay a while because I was curious to see it. I don't own an AGA amiga (my last one was an amiga 3000) so my only option was to use emulation. I was able to play it without any problem except I couldn't get the cd music to run (sound effects were fine though). If you run the french site listed above through babelfish, you'll see that the reviewer mentioned running it through emulation and even getting the music to run. However, it really isn't that amazing of a game, there is no parallax scrolling, but I just got it because I had to see it for myself. Not that it is the worst euroshmup, but with the required specs for the game, I was hoping to be a lot more impressed.

It's a good thing I Downloaded the CD image of T-Zero rather than buying it.
I still haven't treid it.
From the pics I've seen it looks more like a hyped up Project X with unlimited sprites & 1000 colours.

What were the best Euro shmups by the way?

Project X & Disposable Hero had great graphics but sucky gameplay.
Only Apidya was good.

Was Swiv Euro or US?

Any others on other systems?

^^ Bah, Disposable Hero is Awesome, actually one of my alltime favourites!! Especially the CD32 version :)

Never liked Project X though, but many thinks it was great especially for its age. Anyway some Euro shooters worth looking into,

Banshee - Amiga
Battle Squadron - Amiga
Katakis - Amiga
Sanxion - C64
Agony - Amiga (just to drool over the fantastic graphics, the gameplay is not that great ;))

Swiv is made by an european team. It was made by the same guys who ported Silkworm to Amiga.

Battle Squadron is awesome stuff IMO
Uridium 2 is also great
both are on Amiga

There's one on PC, called Future Dimension, that's also pretty good.

And Xenon on ZX Spectrum :D

Apidya, Battle Squadron and Z-Out (all on Amiga) are all excellent games.

^What's the general opinion on Menace and X-Out? I loved both these games as a kid and I still play them. Don't hear a whole lot of love for 'em though.
The biggest unanswered question is where is the money? [1CCS]

Uridium 2 is IMO the best Amiga shmup there is, and quite unique among shmups, so that gives it extra points.

Disposable Hero comes second. Apidya I liked, XOut is overrated, and Menace to odated, never liked it (nor the sequel, Blood Money)

I don't know what the general opinion on these games is, so I give you only my opinion:

I never liked Menace. It always felt poorly designed to me. I didn't like the graphics and most of the enemy formations are laughable. I can imagine someone getting a bit of fun out of the 16 bit versions, but the C64 version is one of the worst games I've ever played. I'm not particularly fond of the sequel, either. Like Akira, I think both Menace and Blood Money are very overrated. But at least the C64 version of Blood Money is enjoyable.

X-Out had some very interesting ideas in it. I liked the idea how the player had to trade points for equipment and extra ships in particular. The choice between survival and highscore is quite common in many shmups, but it never got implemented as directly as in X-Out. The graphics of X-Out were amazing, but I didn't like how they changed only every second stage. The music is good as is most of Hülsbeck's stuff (although I'm pretty sure he recycled at least one track from C64 Katakis for X-Out).
But it's little technical flaws and overall sloppy game/stage/boss design that bring X-Out down and make it a very mediocre title overall. Some people still praise it today, but if you ask them what they actually praise it for, they'll always tell you something about gfx and music. It's sad that some of the promising ideas haven't been carried out better. Again, a very overrated game, IMO.
Thuis said, the best version of X-Out is actually the C64 version, as many of the technical flaws the 16 bit versions suffer from have been fixed and the gfx and music have been ported greatly, so it's only the sloppy stage design that somewhat dulls the experience.

I love the C64 version, one of my all-time faves. An thanks to emulation, the annoying multi load is now no longer a problem. See, emulation isn't always a bad thing! :D

Have to say though, one of the very best things about the game is the soundtrack. Specially the first round and the high score table. Great tunes. It's a shame that no modern shooter (as far as I'm aware anyway) ever expanded on the whole concept of buying and selling ships and powerups though, a very cool feature.

Z-Out is by far the better game, but I will always have a soft spot for X-Out.

Best Euro Shmups:

Disposable Hero
Apidya
Z-Out
Project X - (very hard)
Banshee
SWIV (only Amiga version)
Battle Squadron (Amiga version)
Agony (superb graphs, average gameplay)
Uridium 2
OverKill (is this euro??)
maybe X-Out too

I'm looking for A CD32 to try this ones on big TV :).

Does Disposable Hero CD32 have improved graphics, more colours (256) compared to the A500 version?

Or just an intro?

If I remember this correctly there is no graphical improvements in-game (maybe a few more sprites here and there). But the CD32 version has fantastic music though :)

Well, here's some footage of T-Zero from the English Amiga Boards; hopefully there will be more to come!:

I've got a souped up AMIGA- its an A1200 with 128megs and a Blizzard040 accelerator.
T-Zero is a really cool wee shooter, very crisp graphics, good collision detecting- a lot better that a lot of shooters for the Amiga.
I'd say the most like it would be disposable hero.
I really enjoyed it- its well put together and pushes the Amiga and uses a lot of effects- which you can switch off if your machine is struggling.
