Yeah, someone at Capcom USA definitely caught hell for that one.
I like Strider more than Strider 2, fo sho. Capcom should have waited to make Strider 2 on the PS2, because IMO, it looks fugly -- especially with those polygonal backgrounds.
i'm a big fan of the fastness so Strider 2 is tops in my book (of course, after watching that replay awhile back, i can only get to stage 3 or 4 at my best). gotta pop that game in again, good times for games i utterly suck at.
Strider 2 isn't fugly! Yeah, it's definitely looking pretty aged right about now, but back in the day I thought the animation was pretty killer. If you can get it going on S-Video or component it looks really sharp and plays like a dream. The real killer for me was all the loading, but it's still a worthy successor.
I love both striders (though I'm much better at the first that I could 1 life). Never could single credit strider 2 what with that final boss and all. The balrog stage in strider 2 is SOOO great...

Strider 2 looks esp. great on the PS2 with texture smoothing. An awesome and underlooked sequel I'd say. Getting through to the highest set of planes on the plane jumping level is just an amazing experience.
I got Strider 2 from a friend, and he was complaining about how easy the game was, and how he finished it in the same day he got it and all this stuff.
Then I got the game, and I was smoked by the first boss.... and again and again a few times before I could beat it.
I still have trouble beating the 2nd level, and never got past the 3rd level.
It's a great game indeed. One of the best 2d platform game available for the PSX.
And of course , my friend just credit-feed the game, heh.
Yes, because as Ghegs said, every copy printed has the CDs reversed.
Anyway, Strider 2 has brutal bosses like that mammoth; haven't 1CCed it myself... But I can only blame myself since the controls are silky smooth (well, I also blame the lack of lives unlike the original Strider).
first time i played strider 2 was like "waaah fugly" then didnt touch it for years.
then i gave it a chance, not only it wasnt fugly, just low res, but its effin great in every way, very different from the original, yet very simmilar (this is how all "revival" titles should be)
the only gripe i had with it is that it was a wee bit too long to 1CC, then again maybe i just lacked skills.
Long? There's only 3 stages if you start at 1, 2, or 3 and just move on to 4. Takes less than 20 minutes IIRC. Were you playing every stage from 0-6 or something?
Actually the game is only 'silky smooth' in parts, there are places you experience pretty heavy slowdown and the buttons can become unresponsive (this really only happens though when you are using a super weapon during a boss fight--but when else would you use your super weapons?)
And yes, the game can be extremely short--you only need to play one of the first three levels, and then move to the last levels (4-6? it has been a long time since I've played it). I do remember that level zero sucks, even as a bonus, it is just a poor level.

Err, whoops, I meant 0-5 for 6 stages total, 3 of which are required.
Forgot about the slowdown (which is simply due to the limited PS memory and is supposedly not found in the arcade version) but it's only an occasional problem and happens most often when you use boost.
hmm weird, did i play all 3 levels or something?
i dont quite remember, first stage was with the chinese chicks ala strider 1, then the rooftop stage with a super giant dragon and his master as the boss, then i moved onto the snow stage (which usually ended my run, and that's after lots of pactice)
yea maybe i just sucked at this game.
Yeah, I mostly had this problem with slowdown when using boost against the level 1 & 2 boss, and on the mammoth in level 3.
Hey! I still have faqs on this and strider 1 on gamefaqs, who would've thunk?

Yeah, it seems you went to stage 3 as well, which isn't required. Stage 3 also happens to be by far the hardest among stages 1-3, esp. since the mammoth is one of the toughest bosses in the game. Going there as your second stage makes the difficulty there even higher.
Nice FAQs, CMoon! I think I remember referencing them a few years back.
Does anyone have the arcade board of Strider 2?
On that, the high scores screen shows level 0 (the jungle) but I can't find a way to unlock it??
Does anyone know about this?
I've thought about trying to 1cc it, because I thought about that same thing- I've also tried really high scores and fast times, you know getting "A"'s and stuff, but it's too damn hard for that.
I was trying to 1cc it for some time, but the last level just makes it nearly impossible. There are SO many ways to die, never mind the final boss... Honestly there is nothing in the entiirity of the game that even approaches the difficulty of the last level.

You know, it's an arcade game, so it's designed for a single play-through, so I am imagining that there's just got to be a way to unlock the level 0 while your playing so you can go ahead and select it at the level select screen.

I'd guess Level 0 is something extra they threw in for the home port, but of course I can't confirm this.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.
That's what I thought at first, too, but during the high score screen, they scroll through some of the jungle environments- I can't imagine they'd make that stuff and not use it.

Again, it could just be something they threw in for the port. Those scenes would simply be missing/changed from the arcade version if that is so.

What hardware is the arcade version running on? It doesn't look like a CPS-2 game to me very much. More like that Namco board that powered the Tekkens. System 22 or something like that?
So weird. If only they had waited to do it on Naomi. Yes, it's a great game, quite underrated and all that, but to have this thing blazing by on Naomi? Too much.
