Macross: Do You Remember Love? (saturn)

Post by JL »

Is this the same game as Super Dimension Fortress Macross? Are there two Macross-based games on saturn then? I've tried 'Macross: Do You Remember Love?' this one and it was quite poor.

I believe that "DYRL" is the only Macross shmup on the Saturn, the vertical "SDF Macross" was never ported, anyplace that lists the 2 separate games needs to be fixed (including this site).

They're the exact same game, as I've explained a few times here already. Ignore the duplicate entry in the Xenofiles. The full name is The Super Dimensional Fortress Macross Do You Remember Love.

Yeah, the game is definitely pretty crappy and features almost the exact same mechanics as Gundam & Z-Gundam Parts 1&2 on the Saturn. They've all got similar multi-button control, transformation, huge hitbox, multiple selectable weapons, large focus on enemies in the background and shooting in the background (a la the equally crappy Iron Man/X-O Manowar Heavy Metal), which has led me to ask in the past why they aren't considered shooters either.

The game is also on the PS and includes demos of Patlabor and Macross VF-X2 as well as better full-screen animation.

The game looks pretty good to me; there's no score from what I saw of it on the Saturn Shooting Collage video, but the shooting action looks pretty solid.

Yea, it did look solid..unfortunately, it's a pretty underwhelming experience. I blame the large sprites for not allowing enough enemies to show up on-screen. It's an OK game, nothing more.

LOL, looking good and looking solid has no bearing on how a game plays. The cinemas are really beautiful. However, it plays like crap compared to Macross 2036 and Scrambled Valkyrie with slippery movement and the necessity of targeting the background every one in awhile.

I played the PS1 version before... couldn't really get into it, although I DO like the multi-multi-multi missiles very much :D

It seems to be one of the Macross trademarks, and I'm always wowed when I watch an almost Bangai-O-esque missile launch in the anime shows...

Could you guys direct me to a page that reviews the game, better with some screenshots?

The SFC Macross is said to be quite good, but I never saw this one. Is this a port of one of the arcade Macross games listed at Klov, or an original game?

I don't know of a page with reviews, but I can tell you for certain that it's definately not a port of one of the arcade Macross games you're talking about.

Interesting. So it's born on the SS. Is it 100% horizontal?

Not sure if you're asking about the DYRL game on SS/PSX or the SFC game but I'll put up reviews of both:

fyi, by far the best Macross game is the PS2 incarnation which is just fantastic, although it's not a shmup. What's even better is that it follows the DYRL storyline so you know exactly what's going down even if you don't read Japanese (kind of like the DYRL games ;)).

Yes, originally on SS, and then ported to PSX. 100% horizontal in all incarnations.

Yep, it's 100% horizontal, AFIK.

Hey, check out some scans and screens of this game on this site:

Click on "Rogue's Gallery" at the top of this webpage. There's an alphabetical listing of games; Macross should be under "M".

Heh, yeah, thanks for the tip. But I'm not a Macross lover, I always found the "fight aliens with Jpop music idol" stuff pretty creepy O_o. I'm more about Gundam when it comes to space opera.
But yeah, the animated movie is a classic of anime, so I watch it once in a while. But I was really more interested into understanding if the game is worthy as a shooter, regardless of the brand attached to it.

Thanks anyway. I assume the PS2 game you mentioned is not the celshaded one that appeared in the west too, right?

If you're not a big macross fan then definitely pass on DYRL as it's just not worth the $$$ on either system (I am a HUGE macross fan and I couldn't justify the $30 it cost for the SS a couple of years ago.)

No, the PS2 game isn't that crap cellshaded effort out west, rather it's this:

Erm, that game looks like it has cell-shading to me! I really liked Robotech: Battlecry. *shrugs*

I've heard that there is a way to turn off the cut-scenes in DYRL, but I can't remember how.
