I had one almost exactly the same, only the ball top is different.
It worked fine except the right position was a tad sticky on occasions. I took it apart and couldn't find anything wrong but it kept doing it. In the end sold it and got a really good price. $30 ish I think i got for it.
Otherwise a great little stick.

Ascii Specialized Joystick used in WD's Raystorm contest!
For lawnspic,
Ah yes, that Asciiware produced Specialized Arcade Stick...bought one from Toys-R-Us back in 1997 at the full MSRP of $69.99 USD. And worth every penny! These particular Ascii joysticks were shipped straight to the USA from Japan, hence the high retail asking price at the current time back in the day... ^_~
*It has built-in adjustable auto-fire for all the buttons via a sliding lever...
*Built-in slow-motion functionality via on/off switch
*Uses Japanese style short-throw arcade ball-topped style joystick layout...
*The controller cord is extra long -- so no worries about having such a short cord situation when using it... ^_~
*A heavy-weighted metal base is located on the bottom for additional stability so it won't move around...
I used this particular Ascii Specialized Joystick for the 1997 Working Designs PSX Raystorm contest and managed to place in the top 10 ranking overall with my 1CC effort -- my consolation prize was a cool Working Designs produced Ray Storm mouse pad that I still use to this very day! So it is competition-worthy as it is, left stock-wise. (Of course, it could be further modified to suit your tastes with authentic Japanese Sanwa or Seimitsu arcade joysticks...) ^_~
Personally, I like the overall visual design scheme of the Ascii Specialize Joystick as it matches with the original 1994 grey-colored PSX console and is roughly about the same size in dimensions as the PSX console itself -- you will not be dissapointed with this arcade joystick. ^_~
