Smallest/largest hitboxes in any shoot 'em up?
Smallest/largest hitboxes in any shoot 'em up?
In relation to playing field size, what are the largest and smallest hitboxes?
Of course, that's just an opinion.

I feel like the hitboxes in most NES shmups are pretty huge since the collision detection in the NES is so bad. Sometimes when I'm playing Gradius I just crash into walls when I get too close to them, even if no part of Vic Viper has touched anything.
In terms of small hitboxes... most Cave games... also, most modern shmups period. In Ikaruga, there's even a part in chapter 2 where you can fit between crates where it doesn't seem like there's any space between them at all. Same with the "up-down" ships in chapter 3. It's larger than a pixel in size but the enemies have small hitboxes too so it seems even smaller.

All cave shmups , especially Battle Garegga have generaly the smallest hitboxes . There was a game called Sonic Princess, hentai shmup , for the PC that has a real big hitbox . By the way , I have Dragon Spirit for the PC engine and eventhough it has a large hitbox it still rules !

Of course, this isn't strictly true for Garegga unless you use the small hitbox option.

I recall being zapped numerous times on that stupid protruding tailfin when playing Zero Wing...also being zapped in the flamey stuff coming out of the back of the Vic Viper's engines in at least one or two of the Gradius games.
As for smallest, Psyvariar 2 is definitely in the running...Mushi's is pretty small too, though it seems even smaller than it is since many of the bullets have hitboxes too.

I was just going to post about Ghost Pilots. I think in Kiken's Neo Geo collection video he says the hitbox is "BIGGER" than the plane?!?Dale wrote:Ghost Pilot's has an obese hitbox. They actually made it the size of the ship...what were they thinking?
OUCH! No wonder I loathed that shmup from the time I started playing it.
So what about smallest? Mushihime-sama FEELS like the smallest hitbox I've ever piloted personally, but the fact that most of the bullets are tons smaller than they look affects this feeling as well, so it might not be much smaller than other Cave hitboxes.
Homura has a pretty itty bitty hitbox as well. I don't remember when (probably while holding the fire button), but you can see it as a little red dot. It's like... a 4 pixel square or something =)
As for biggest, I think Dragon Spirits gets another vote from me. It's so... wide... My god. I think at least part of your tail isn't vulnerable, which is sort of nice. Viper Phase 1 was pretty bad too -_^
