List of Sega shmups?

Post by tehkao »

Does anyone have a list of all the shmups that Sega has developed? I don't mean just shmups that appeared on Sega consoles, or ports, but something original that Sega developed internally.

It's funny but I can only think of a couple offhand...

Transbot
Bio Hazard Battle
Whip Rush
Arrow Flash ( I know it was published by Renovation but I'm sure it was developed by Sega)

Fantasy Zone is a border line shmup so I didn't include it...so is Space Harrier...

Don't forget the awesome (but short) Astro Warrior, a launch title for the SMS.

It's called Motherbase 2000.

I think Choplifter and Fantasy zone count. Also Orguss, the prequel to Transbot. Oh, and Future Spy.

I think you could finish the original Choplifter shooting only 3 shots: one for each house that isn't already on fire. After this, it's just a matter of getting the little guys and bring them back home, and dodge enemy attacks.

Anyway, it was a lot more fun to just shoot all those little guys to pieces :D

This may be obvious, but the original Choplifiter was published by Broderbund. Sega only made the Arcade games (And the SMS ports), still they show a "Licensed by Broderbund" message.

I thought Choplifter was originally made by some guy named "Dan Gorlin"? :?

*sighs* I REALLY wish Sega would start doing shmups again, considering what great ones they developed in the past.

Can't think of one single great shooter by Sega. I'm sure there must be atleast one, but I can't think of any. Crying (Biohazard Battle) seems interessting, that's about it...?

It was. The famouse SEGA arcade/SMS game is a remake of sorts. It's fair to look at it as a seperate game though.

I consider it a shmup (though borderline) because it's a 2D game where most of the action is shooting and bullet dodging. It's as much of a shmup as bangai-o is, at least (which is also a borderliner).

Yes, it was. And then it was published by Broderbund.

I think Broderbund liked to give credit to the creators of their games. I remember Spelunker, Lode Runner, Prince of Persia, Choplifiter, all those games had the name of the main programmer in the title screen.

Thunder Blade should probably count in regard to the SMS and Arcade versions, since most of that game takes place in the top-down perspective- not unlike A-Jax. The SMS one is forced scrolling all the way (no slowing down or hovering allowed).

The Genesis "Super Thunder Blade" is more of a borderliner, concentrating on the Space Harrier view scenes.

Future Spy is another Sega game that's similar to Zaxxon, only with a Bomb button added.
Kinect? KIN NOT.
