I tend to beatbox music and sound effects and everything
Let me try to describe it accurately.. it's top down, low-res, hand drawn.
It's got an apocalyptic, civilization on the edge of total collapse look, with very detailed metallic/organic graphics. The ship has a standard issue, upgradeable single shot cannon (but with a high firing rate if you pound the button or use rapid fire)
Shooting down enemies release gunpods, and whenever your ship flies near them, 'latches' onto them. Gunpods have limited ammo, but they're plentiful, so there's rarely a moment you're just stuck with your onboard weaponry. Gunpods can be fired as missiles - the more ammo they contain, the more damage they do upon impact.
There's vulcan cannons, pulse cannons, cutting lasers, homing lasers (RayForce), straight missiles, swarm missiles, homing missiles, and plenty others.
It's full of these awesome scenes like for example, where you fly down low above a metropolis avenue, full of rubble, wih a huge organic tetsuo-like monster that grows organs and appendages as it sees fit - and grabs bits of scenery and parked cars as makeshift shields (which are of course easily blown away), and throws these things at you.
The missions are presented on a map, where you have some freedom in choosing the next one - some are large scale assaults with many comrade fighters (and not many beside you surviving of course)
Every comrade fighter has a pilot with his or her background story, promoting emotional involvement, and a medal ranking system - the more missions you survive, the higher rank you gain, the more respect you get from your fellow fighters...
I know, plenty of obvious influences there, I'm not sure the way I describe it conveys the image of an awesome shmup to you people...
