You'll have fun with Galuda. It's very deep and versatile with that cool scoring system. I find it very satisfying when I can get lots of those big 100's all over the screen. It's taken me awhile to get the hang of it, but that's what's fun about it. I still have a lot to learn in order to score really big though.

Thunderforce V to me seemed kind of clunky. Its a bit slow, i think because they tried to add some drama into the mix. almost like a realtime cutscene.

It just makes you antsy. Its an ok game i guess. again, i'm not a big Hori fan. i did however LOVE Border Down.

I think if you can find it cheap enough, grab it!

The port of Gradius III is pretty rough around the edges. If you want to enjoy it, go for an SNES copy.

However, the reason to get the collection is to play IV. Can only comment on the first three levels though, as stage 3 is the BUBBLE STAGE OF DEATH and I never got past it. Kinda ruined the experience for me and haven't played it in a while. It's a decent game, if not for that level.

I've already got it ;) Need to order Gaiden though...

Am now a bit concerned because the ebayer isn't responding to my posts. I received an email when I asked about payment, but since then nothing... Hope I've not been conned.

You got all those in a lot on ebay? Some poor bastard must be sacrificing his/her shmup collection for an operation or something.

That's a pretty nice little "box set" to get all at once, though I always have trouble putting any focus on a game when I over-buy like that. I once bought Elemental Master, Undeadline, Gunbird 1, Soukyugurentai and Batsugun all at the same time and it was chaos for about two months. Still, how nice is it to wake up, look at the collection and think, "Which NEW shmup will I play today?"

You think that's bad. I bought a guys Shmup collection from this very forum and included Radiant Silvergun, Batsugan, Gradius Gaiden, Souky, Battle Gsarrega Parodios and god knows what else (I still have them all by the may :) )

Imagine trying to choose out of that lot.

However, the reason to get the collection is to play IV. Can only comment on the first three levels though, as stage 3 is the BUBBLE STAGE OF DEATH and I never got past it. Kinda ruined the experience for me and haven't played it in a while. It's a decent game, if not for that level.
I just picked the Gradius pack as well and I'd have to agree on the above thus far.

Seriously, what's the deal with Gradius III? Is it really that much better for SNES? The game is fucking hard. I can't get past the first half of Stage 1! So frustrating.

Gradius IV is the saving grace on this thing. After spending an hour yelling at III after shortly getting it I was pleasantly surprised by IV. Graphics don't hold up too well, but it really doesn't look bad by any means. I kind of like it. As for Stage 3, I had read about this prior to buying it and was curious. It doesn't seem that bad. It feels like I can pass it with practice, but time will tell. I still haven't had a chance to get into it as much as I want.

Was IV on any other system? Doesn't appear to be. How faithful is the port to the PCB?

The reason the PS2's III is such a bitch is because it is more a port of the arcade version (AFAIR), which is infamous for a reason. The SNES port is quite different. A warmer, fuzzier Gradius III, if you will.

IV was an arcade-only game until this collection and is not currently emulated by MAME. I've never played the actual PCB.

I don't believe there was ever a non-JP version of the Gradius IV PCB either.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking when I looked over at KLOV.

I think when I try Gradius III again, I'll just bump it down to easy difficulty and see if it's any more... enjoyable.

i am waiting on the Gradius pack myself. looking forward to it a great deal, Gradius 3 looks like a riot (play it a lot on SNES) of shattering pain, and Gradius 4 looks fun as well. :D

what i am really waiting Gradius wise is Gradius Deluxe for Saturn and Konami Antiques MSX. then i will have all of them (sort of).
I have no sig whatsoever.

Did you get In The Hunt for Saturn or PS1? The Saturn version has horrible slowdown. But the import PS1 seems hard to come by. I can't find a copy other than the one on eBay for ~$35. Not really willing to shell out that much for it right now.
