Shooting Watch - anyone got one of these?

Post by Super Laydock »

Was just wondering if someone here owns either a original Hudson shooting watch or one of those released to commemorate it's 20th birthday.

Noticed the mention of it on IC and went to the site but it seems it's already sold out after being on sale for only a few days. :o

What is it like and what exactly does it do? Does it just measure the button mashing speed or is there more to it?

Also, anyone knows of a place where they (re-)sell them?

It is shaped like an original famicom controller, but yellow (with a Hudson logo) and it has a small lcd. And yes, measuring the button mashing speed is all it does.

GCE, maker of Vectrex, made Game Time wristwatches in 1982

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

Back in 1982 and into 1983, GCE (General Consumer Electronics) forayed into uncharted territory with their digital 'LCD' type of game wristwatch pieces by the name of "Game Time" wristwatches. You might recall that GCE was the same company that made the classic Vectrex standalone vector-based gaming system. The wristwatch's LCD screen used simple black-colored dots as the basic graphics for their simple but fun to play wristwatch LCD games. The programming behind some of those simple watch games were another matter entirely... ^_~

Now one of those GCE produced "Game Time" game wristwatches featured a 4-way minature arcade-style joystick complete with fire button and played arcade shmup styled type of games on it's LCD-type screen interface. It was called "Arcade Time" and it was produced in limited quanities. I remember heading on down to my local Kay-bee Toys toystore back in 1982-1983 and trying them out -- they were so cool for their time! ^_~

I believe three or four different GCE "Game Time" wristwatches were produced (each with a different theme) and even told the time as well. The asking MSRP was listed at $24.99 USD -- eventually they went on clearance and could be had for a mere $5.00-$10.00 cheap! Nowdays, they sell for mucho dinero on eBay and the like (average price is around $300.00-$400.00+ USD easily but I think they aren't really worth that much IMO)... ^_~

I learned later on that the GCE "Game Time" wristwatches' game programming was all done in-house at a Japanese electronics manufacturing plant using a special programmable box (pretty impressive hardware to cram as much programming into such tiny ROM allotments by today's standards -- was considered "state-of-the-art" back in 1982-1983 for it's time)..... ^_~

-----------------------------

You might recall seeing some the cool LCD-type game wristwatches sold back in the early 1980's such as:

Casio produced 1982 Pac-Man LCD-type game wristwatch sold at Sears back in the day...

Frogger LCD-type game wristwatch

Q*bert LCD-type game wristwatch

Star Trek shmup-based LCD-type game wristwatch (using two buttons -- one button to move your spacecraft and second button, to fire at your enemies and blast them into oblivion...)

and of course, the GCE's lineup of "Game Time" game wristwatches as well..... ^_~

Just a stroll down memory lane when it comes to those mini LCD game wristwatches -- they fetch a pretty penny on the 2nd-hand market, especially if they're in brand new condition... ^_~

That Casio produced Pac-Man LCD game wristwatch retailed for $49.99 USD when it made it debut in the USA back in 1982 -- it would have to be the cool novelty factor of being able play such a minature version of Pac-Man LCD game mounted on your wrist 24/7 back in the day -- either that or just pick up a Coleco produced Tabletop Electronic game of Pac-Man to get one's fix of it (with a bigger screen and easier on the eyes + battery back-upped high scores upon powering down for the day -- was a cool innovation when it came to those portable tabletop with 'vacuum florescent display' type of electronic games from the early 1980's from companies such as: Bandai, Tomy, Entex, Casio, Coleco, Tiger Electronics, etc.)...

Surely you do remember seeing them mini LCD game wristwatches, Eight?

Don't forget there is a DS homebrew version of this out, I can only manage 125 ;(

There has to be some jiggery pokery going on with these scores though: http://files-ds-scene.net/shooting_watch/?s=scores

I just got mine today and it's of good quality to be sure. I'm glad they did a reissue after that limited version one back on 16shot about a year or so ago. My best (free handed) is 103 currently while holding-hand (thumb) is 86. Really is a nifty item and I'm glad I got it, nice to know it has a chronograph as well.

One question, anyone know how to set/adjust the time? EDIT: Maybe it's just an internal clock although that's kind of a shame.

Anyone know how to unlock the extra modes too?

I ordered one form NCSX last week. $30 seems a bit much for one, but it should be neat to have.
The best I've gotten on the DS is 90 something. Does anyone have a link to the finger exercises with Takahashi Meijin, i'll never blow up a watermelon at this rate.

Unlocks are tim-ebased. The first one is... dice? or something, after about a month. Still haven't got the second.

To set the time, go to time mode, hold start and select for about 4 seconds. B button will scroll through the fields, A will advance, start to finish (like any digital watch).

It looks like the hudsonstyle version has some stuff other than the star soldier sticker. Takahashi Meijin business card?

Yeah, for the record it's been many months and I'm still with the default 3 choices of shooting, chronograph, and time.

Uh, neither of the unlocks are time-based. I've gotten both unlocked before on mine (although I block the battery when not in use). The first is unlocked by pressing buttons until a certain number and the second is to score above Takahashi Meijin's 160 record (not too difficult since you have 2 buttons to cheat).

I figured it was time-based because the first one unlocked on its own... I didn't realize it was because it had stopped at a certain number. Dunno why I would have gotten such a low score anyway...

Also, I'm confused about this 2 buttons thing. My shooting watch won't register a new button press until both buttons have been completely released - you can hold A, hold B, release A, press A.... as long as at least one button is kept down it won't increment. Am I missing something here?
