any vertical shmups for beginners?

Post by Vasquo »

Hi everyone. Could You recommend me some vertical shmups for beginner? I didn't play it from very long time, and I don't know with which title I should start. Also, I like a "chill-out-one", like a Pop'n'Twinbee for SNES etc. So, If You know some good vertical shmups for beginners (slow and not so many bullets etc.) I would be thankful. They can be on Any console/arcade/PC/mobile, expect next and next-next-gen (ps2,x360 and so on). Thanks in advance : )

I'd say the first four levels on almost any Psikyo shmup are very playable.

I found both steel dragon 1 and 2 to be on the easier side, and the good news is you can pick up both in a dual pack. For an introduction to more manic style verticle shmups you might want to give ESPGaluda a try. It can be very forgiving or difficult depending on how you play and use your special abilities.

Batsugun special edition is pretty easy first loop (technically 'normal' is 'easy' since you are expected to loop it.) Plus its just a great vertical shmup.

Fire Shark/same! same! same! on the genesis is pretty easy (though again, default is easy)

Psyvariar is easy if you don't kick up the rank (some people don't call this a 1cc, and they'll make fun of you.)

Gun Frontier (saturn) is easy with the autofire options (technically cheating).

Espgaluda is not THAT easy, but seems much more accessible than most cave shmups.

On the other hand, I am not sure that being easy is a way to get people into shmups. DOJ to me is still one of the best, and smacks me down hard every time I play it!

Well...I think we can pretty well disqualify the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii at the moment. Guess it would help a bit if you had mentioned exactly what systems you actually own...I'm going to pretend you didn't mention mobile games (gag). Erm...perhaps that leaves the PlayStation 2 then? Here goes, say, my Top 5 recommendations for introductory vertical shmups...only a couple of them having a light flavoring of bullet hell (in no particular order):

Oretachi Game Center Vol. 6: Sonic Wings
Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol. 1: Strikers 1945 I & II
Psyvariar 2: Ultimate Final
Raiden III
Shikigami No Shiro II

You should have a good time with all of them...even old crusty Sonic Wings. And you certainly would be missing out if you didn't pick up the four Taito Memories releases...every game on those disks is particularly old-school friendly...which I take it is where you wish to reside in your gaming...and there is certainly nothing wrong with that.

*sighs* Vasquo said in his very first post that he was looking for games before the 128-bit era. I'd bet any money he's playing on emulators, so you should probably keep your suggestions to games that are emulated. And even if he wasn't, buying a modded or Japanese PS2 and spending the time/effort/cash to import a game from Japan doesn't qualify as "trying it out."

Anyway, Vasquo, I'd recommend the classic Aero Fighters trilogy of arcade verts. The game mechanics aren't anything more complex than one button for guns and the other for bombs, the challenge is pretty reasonable until you reach the last stages, and they have a lot of characters to choose from. Aero Fighters 2 and 3 are Neo-Geo games, so make sure you have neogeo.zip in MAME's ROM folder. You might also try some of the Star Solder games for TurboGrafx-16.

If you want to give a danmaku (AKA "so many bullets you can barely see the ground") game a shot, ESP Ra.De. is probably the least brutal of Cave's arcade games that are emulated.

Thanks for response. I try to check some of those : ) btw. I just love Psikyo games ; )
Oh, and I own only NES and PlayStation... Need to use emulators to play other games.

Super Star Soldier and Gunhed for PC-Engine should be easy enough.

I would actually recommend Green Wind, due to the fact that it's mild enough to introduce anyone to the concept of very basic bullet pattern dodging. (You can opt to avoid the range of fire completely instead of forcing you to try to weave throught the curtain of bullets.)

The answer is Strikers 1945 II. Dodonpachi DOJ is also a good idea because it's so good and the bosses are so fun.

Only one comes to mind. Galaga. Everyone should get their start on Galaga. And it's on the NES too. Actually, I think it might be on everything.

I've always thought Raiden was good for starting out on shmups. Raiden Project and Raiden DX are on PS1. You can even get Raiden II and Raiden III for PC if you don't have a PS1.

Battle Bakraid is another good one for beginners, since it can be played either as a straightforward shooter, or you can go more in depth with things like multipliers and bomb strategies when you get used to it. Garegga and Batrider seem to have a lot more fans around here than Bakraid, but quite frankly, I think those games were designed for masochists.

Agreed.

I love Cave's shmup games alot. Im a big fan of bullet-hell type shooters, and Cave does em best, I say. I play Mushihime, DoDonPachi, DDP DOJ, Progear, and EspRaDe. I think Im forgetting one or two.

If any bosses are "fun", my vote goes to those in Mushihime and Progear. I think the bullet patterns and such are very well done in Mushihime; Wheras Progear seems to be fond of bullets that do crazy things, like switching direction mid flight or exploding into pieces. Im very fond of both of these games.

DOJ, on the other hand..... Those dang bosses are just infuriating. I love this game, but...... Omigod, that 2nd boss is the most annoying damn thing since the Giga Wing boat.

A fight between me and that thing, usually just turns into a really long string of four-letter words, lol.

Also, I could swear that DOJ's bullets, some of them dont stand out as much as I'd like them to.... Mushihime, I have no trouble following bullets at all; They're all purple, and completely stand out from the background or anything else. Wheras in DOJ, often times I'll get hit by a little blue laser I wasnt really aware of. The original DDP doesnt do this so badly.....

It's always those little lasers...... argh.

So naturally the 2nd boss is MADE OF THEM.

I think he doesn't want to play manic shooters because he said "with not to many bullets on screen".

LOOOOOOOOOL I'm thinking about James "angrynintendonerd" Rolfe challenging that boss

However, Esprade is NOT the easier Cave game emulated: if any, the answer is Donpachi.

Yes Giga Wing 2, with the special code to control all four planes with one controller. You could basicaly sit on your controller and you'd still do OK.

Bokandesuyo PS1 ? (vertical scrolling but not tate screen)
I haven't played it much but it looks not very hard.

also, don't believe less bullets mean easier game!

ESP Galuda is a good choice too. It's a wonderful game with interesting mechanics that will let you progress a lot before you hit a wall.

Yes G-Stream G2020 is astonishingly good and doesn't get enough respect. Made by the guy who founded Triangle Service it's as good as, if not better than, Trizeal :D
