Advice on good LCD monitor for playing MAME?

Post by HardcoreOtaku »

Hi Folks,
I'm planning to to get a new LCD Monitor for the PC I use for gaming, I've got a load of questions, any help/advice appreciated.

Up till now my past gaming has been all on Home Consoles and on a SuperGun played on my CRT TV, recently I've discovered MAME so now the majority of my gaming will be moving over to my PC.

I also wanted to get a new LCD TV aswell as a new gaming PC monitor,
but over the last few years with LCD the lines have now blurred between monitors and TVs so I thought maybe to get one screen and use it for both, that is plug in my consoles and gaming PC into one LCD Monitor/TV.
Has anyone on here tried this? if yes can they recommend any models?

Also with a wide screen LCD in TATE, wouldn't that be perfect for playing shooters on MAME?

If you used a large LCD Monitor/TV with a PC would there be issues of displaying MAME at the the correct resoloution?
I say this because with modern 3D PC gaming its a big issue to match your Graphics card with monitor, but is this relevant with MAME?

Sorry to blabble on just whilst looking arounnd at LCD Monitors/TVs I had all these questions I didn't know the answer to, so any help appreciated.
Cheers

i'm currently using a "hd ready" widescreen 32' lcd tv for my computer display as well as for my xbox 360. i've tried mame on it, and the result is bitterly dissappointing, very blurry. and running tate mode on a widescreen is a very bad idea, since 'vertical" games usually run on a 3:4 ratio, not 9:16. finally, ghosting is too obvious while gaming unless you get a top of the line lcd tv.

there should be only 2 reasons, for me, to change from a crt to lcd, first being able to display hd/digital contents (i peronally find crt displays hd contents quite awkward), secondly is that you can match perfectly the resolution of said lcd display. space, weight, design etc. shouldn't be factors in choosing a display IMHO.

In the past I've ran MAME in tate on a Dell 2407wfp lcd dcreen (24" 16:10)... MAME ran great in 1920x1600, real crisp, barely any ghosting/trails, it was good fun.. You can specify 16:9 or 16:10 in the mame configuration to fix the aspect ratio stuff.

BUT NOW, Any recent version of MAME runs like absolute crap for any game that does not use 60hz refresh rates... Nasty unstable framerates and glitchy sound so I can hardly mame it up anymore, and I have no idea how to fix this problem, it's due to the LCD working at 60hz for the refresh rate. If I hook it to a CRT, it works perfectly fine. :?

So I just figured I'd throw that out there, there may be a solution (use old versions of mame? that sucks)... maybe some other people here would know.
