Games you've played the hell out of but never beaten

Post by Never_Scurred »

A coworker and I were choppin' it up this morning and just takin' it back to the old school and one of the subjects we touched on was games. After naming a list of all the usual suspects and whatnot, I came to the realization that there were many games that I remember playing the shit out of, but never actually finishing. Its like, I can tell you about every level of the Metal Slug series, the Super Marios, Contras, Mega Man, whatnot, but I can't tell you what the endings were from personal experience. Its like I get far enough, put them down for awhile, then pick 'em back up later and play.

So, I ask you guys, what games have you played forwards and back but have never completed? I'm not talking about games you picked up once or twice or games you are trying to beat, but the ones you enjoy and spent a great deal of time on but never cared to finish.

1. Dodonpachi DOJ

2. Metal Slug 2-6

3. Street Fighter 2(Played the fuck out of this game and even owned the SNES version but have never seen the endings)

4. Super Mario 1, 3, World, 64

5. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic and Knuckles

6. Ikaruga (I pick up this game at least once a day. Play a little before work)

7. Mega Man series (Own all of the common NES and SNES games, but haven't beaten a single one even though I used to play the shit out of them religiously)

8. Marvel Vs. Capcom 1 and 2(especially 2, they have a machine at school so I get at least one good play before class)

9. Castlevania series (same as the Mega Man series)

10. Battle Garegga/Batrider(I don't even want to beat these games, I have fun picking up and seeing how badass my dodging skills are)

Final Fantasy 6 and 7...really weird, because I was right on the cusp of finishing both. I literally got to the final boss's doorstep, having fought past everything else and collected all the stuff in the final dungeon, but then backtracked outside for some reason, maybe to build levels or whatnot...but in both cases, after having gone that far in both games (and for the most part enjoyed the trip) just never went back and beat the final boss. I honestly have no idea why this is...

Super Ghouls & Ghosts. 2nd loop.
I can rape that game with anything but that goddamn bracelet.
I used to try once a year when I was little. I gave up, realizing the challenge was too fucking stupid instead of challenging.

About 2 years from now I'm probably going to say Varth...

ESPRade. It was the first Cave shooter I played seriously, and I put about 200 hours on it in four months. Just couldn't get a 1CC, although I came within one life of it. I've not gone back to it since, but I'll probably try to knock it off before trying out the eight or so Cave ports & ROMs I've got atm.

Well, excluding Shmups: Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, Disgaea, Viewtful joe, Gradius V, The Red Star, Ico, Suikoden II, Z.O.E: The 2nd runner, Fallout 2, Arcanum, Freedom Force...etc.
Phew, I really need to finish what I start more often.

Every Final Fantasy ever. :?

I went as far as to hope that I would beat XII, but then my dumb ass went and bought Magna Carta: Tears of Blood* and Radiata Stories.

*With voice acting second only to Castle Shikigami 2.

Darkmere.

And then there's a long list of hateful action games that let me reach the final boss only to crush me mercilessly. The Super Shinobi comes to mind.

hahaha... I've beaten that one many times.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Ouendan on the highest difficulty setting. Normal and Hard took a fair while to beat, but I just can't topple the Very Hard version of Ready, Steady, Go. It's the first verse that kicks the crap out of me. If I can get past those first few bars, I can usually get about halfway through the song, but most of the time the first couple of bars drop my energy almost completely. Of course, the most annoying part of that track is the unskippable 35 second intro.

The original Double Dragon NES. Still haven't finished it.

Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (PSX). I finished the original game, but not the Epilogue quest.

Parasite Eve. Again, I finished the regular game, but not the EX game.

A countless list of shmups....

Final Fantasy VII. I have started a new game on that at least 4-5 times with the intent of using the 450+ page guide I printed several years ago to finally "walk through" the game, but have still never finished it. I get to about mid-way through disc 2 & either lose interest (usually due to more pressing matters in life taking precedence) or I neglect to play for a couple weeks & then I'm utterly lost when I go back to it. It's such an interesting game, but with as little time as I get to dedicate to gaming on a regular basis, it's just too tall an order. That's why I'm trying to work my way back up to that. I'm working in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door right now, and it's going fairly quickly. Hopefully that will get me in the mood to go back to Lunar 2, then maybe back to FF7.

I'm at the final boss. (Literally, three steps away) and I just quit. I died on my first try and I didn't want to watch the 5 minute scene before the fight so I just stopped. So close.

Milon's Secret Castle would have to be first on my list.
Back in the day a friend and I played it for months, progress was slow to come, but the game always drew us back for more. Eventually we were just plain stuck, unable to figure out how to get through a series of slightly diagonal corridors. I've read elsewhere that the game was really easy. There was a lot of tricky hidden stuff, so that might have been some of the problem. But even after trying it again on Hudson Best Collection Vol.3 I got my ass handed to me pretty quickly in just the first room.
This thread has inspired me! I think I shall go find a good FAQ or walkthrough and give it another try.

edit:
A quick Google search was a little surprising, not only is Milon's Secret Castle regarded as damn difficult, but there is a definate fan base out there, as told of in the mailbag section of Milon's Secret Website. And as coincidence would have it, the game was just released on the Wii Virtual Console last week in North America.
I also found exactly where I had been stuck, evidently we had made it pretty far into the game (my friend and I easily had over 100 hours of combined playtime to get there), at 12:22 in this YouTube playthrough is the passage we never found.
Hey, now I don't have to bother playing through it! I've just seen the ending.

I've completed this one, but it took at least half a dozen attempts at the final boss to do it. After 30 hours of pure entertainment, that tedious sequence was a nightmare to have to sit through, over and over.

I haven't beaten any shmups.

Games I'm working on: DDR Extreme. I can almost pass max 300 on heavy, then after that I have the even worse songs of Maxx unlimited, legend of maxx, paranoia survivor and paranoia survivor max. *sighs*

I'd have to say that's the closest I am to beating a game, is passing those ddr songs. The rest I have a long way to go, I have been playing Zero Gunner 2 like mad lately, but I still can't get past 1-6 on one credit.

I put around 60 hours in to Rogue Galaxy, loved every minute of it but never got past the final boss. I still felt that I had achieved everything I wanted to anyway. Only other game comparable would be Oblivion which I am playing at the minute, around 80 hours or more, and I could see another 80 hours going into it easily.

Shooters aside, Devil Hunter Yohko (MD version) - I spent A LOT of time trying to beat the boss in stage 4, but never pulled it off. Real cheap! Same goes for the last boss in the MD port of Valis III.

Play ITG, you'll get better at DDR. Or... Play ITG and you won't come back to DDR.

Wow, I remember the time when Max 300 was all new and everybody went 'OMG NEVER!' and one week later the first video appeared of somebody actually doing it.

@Fro

Let me guess Kao Megura's FF7 FAQ of gamefaqs? I did exactly the same, got to near end of disc 2, then just quit.

Chronotrigger, got to last boss inside lavos, died never came back.

Phantasy star 4. Got to Lasheich in Sky castle, kicked my ass then quit.

Lunar. I'm on the final boss and have never beaten it. The save file is probably over four years old.
Feedback will set you free.
