Some games will be missing. Couldn't get Captain Skyhawk or Mutant Virus running, couldn't be bothered to try another emu. Could also not be bothered to include some ports I didn't feel like playing NES versions of.
This is a terrible idea, but I will see it through to #1. Will probably take a few weeks to finish.
To the countdown.
#39Silver Surfer
This game: running into every rubber duck and bridge post, bumping head on ceilings, watching Silver Surfer fall, getting swamped with zigzagging enemies despite rapidfire.
Yes, after today I do feel like the guy in my signature pic.
Feel free to discuss the games and/or criticize my opinion. I will try to do 2-3 a day until I hit the halfway point (tedious uploading pics and such), then take a short break.
Is this community service for not releasing the port ever, or did you just lose a bet?
Edit: Honestly, this would be like asking me to review hip-hop albums. Who made you do this Rob?!!

Eugenics: you know it's right!
Rob has to go back and criticize all the ye olde shmups he innately despises every once in awhile, it's like the changing of seasons. Just sit back and enjoy the show.
@ CMoon and BulletMagnet: haha. Getting the next two out of the way...
37Volguard II
Volguard II refused to let my ship shoot if there were more than 5 sprites on screen. Not sure if that's an emulation problem, but it didn't really matter. Just look at it. Background looks like a blindfolded, lefthanded drawing of the globe from memory. The ship kinda looks like a little guitar. That's pretty cool.
2/10

36Tiger Heli
Tiger Heli must run at about 10 frames per second. Destroying unmanned planes is about as good as this gets. You can get little heli options, but they only last for about 30 seconds since they are vulnerable to enemy fire.
I wonder if that green mass is supposed to look 3D. This screen almost makes it look like it could be decent, but all of the tanks sniping at this fat, slow heli makes Raiden seem like a Compile game. Economical movement and a few well placed shots are your only hope (there is no sweeping fire around in this game).
Forgive me for stating the obvious but since it appears that your emulator is less than stellar*, maybe you should try using a different one? FCE Ultra (for Windows) is supposed to be very good.
*Unless Tiger Heli is supposed to run at 10fps and Volguard II is a pacifist shmup

It's not the emulator... Tiger Heli really does run at like 10fps*.
(* To be fair, it's more like 15, but those extra 5 fps will be lost on the flickering green glob.)
Yeah, I'm using Nestopia. I followed up on Volguard II and imagine it being bumped about 5 spots. Missed the "POW" indicating the amount of ammo you have, which can be replenished by shooting enemies. Also, I thought it was weird that the plane wasn't crashing when I first played it. That's because it takes 100 hits (!). wtf. Upgraded to 4/10.

Best review ever. This needs to go in the xenocide files.
35B-Wings
A typical scene. Seamless rows of objects to destroy, enemies homing in on your ship in a v-formation. Strategy: scroll left or right while firing. Boss strategy: point ship at boss and shoot.
For what its worth, I love toaplan and can't stand Tiger Heli. The arcade version of it doesn't feel like a good shmup--I can't imagine how lousy the NES version is (well actually after Rob's review, maybe I can.)
I concur, this thread is the absolute best.
