Best NeoGeo MVS games?

Post by dboeren »

Having recently obtained a NeoGeo MVS motherboard (thanks BlueLander!), I'm interested in finding out what MVS games I should be checking out for purchase.

I have three carts so far:
Samurai Shodown 4
King of Fighters 98
Magical Drop 3

I know I need some Metal Slug (X, 3, or both), and probably Pulstar. I already have Puzzle Bobble 2, so I don't need the MVS version. What else should I be looking for?

I've always been a big fan of Magician Lord, and if you're into King of Fighters, 96 is my fave (right next to 03, but I'm not sure how much those two cost; I'd guess 96 is cheaper).

Spin Master
Top Hunter
Zupapa
Blue's Journey
Last Blade
Last Blade 2
Kabuki Clash
Magical Drop 3
Blazing Star
Ghostlop (unreleased puzzle gem, proto bootleg is your only means)
Mark of the Wolves
Real Bout Special
Windjammers
Flip Shot
Neo DriftOut
Neo Bomberman

There's more but I can't remember right now. Make Spin Master, DriftOut and Blazing Star your top priorities. Zupapa and Top Hunter also rock hard.

Oh yeah, I know I'm definitely in the minority here, but I like The Super Spy a lot :) It's definitely cheap, maybe around $25.

The one's I play the most are, (I don't have tons, but a lot more than this)

Garou Mark of the Wolves
Pulstar
Blazing Star
Last Resort (it's great, despite any criticism)
Shock Troopers 2
All Metal Slugs, esp. #1
Robo Army
Aerofighters 2 and 3

And a lot of those old cheap ones are great, too.
like Sengoku
Ninja Comando
Ninja Combat

One's I'm not super familiar with, but would love to buy are
Strikers 1945
Prehistoric Isle II
Shock Troopers
SVC Chaos

Get the other Samurai Shodowns. The first two are cheap and are the only ones with Gen An.
Feedback will set you free.

Best this, best that. Just bite the bullet and emulate/try at an arcade before a purchase  general consensus-i are shite most of the time anyway.

That said, I'd recommend metal slug 1 (don't know why people assume that just because it's the first game in the series, it's not as good as 3 or X), as well as Samurai Shodown 2 and Money Puzzle/Idol Exchanger. Neo Bomberman is good too.

Last Blade 2 and Garou are good but available pretty cheap on DC and soon PS2 (most of those other games have console ports but I remember these as being super expensive on the neo for some reason).

Windjammers is one of my favorites on the Neo Geo as a whole. Strikers 1945+ gets a bad rep but is really a great game, though it is very, very hard. And I know it gets no love, but I have always enjoyed the old, old , old school style of Ghost Pilots.

Yeah, Neon - you're right that it's best to try first, but there are so many MVS games out there that it's good to have a short list to start from.

Pulstar series (Blazing Star counts as a sequel, right?)
Metal Slug series
King of Fighters series
Fatal Fury series
Art of Fighting series
Samuraii Showdown series

Those where really obvious choices, though.

Why choose this over the first one? I hear more people like the original more, but maybe I'm getting them mixed up.

I think the first one is better, too. I've just played it a tiny bit, but my impression is that it's better than #2- I own #2 and I like it. I put #1 on my "want to get" list.
