first physical smart bomb
first physical smart bomb
I know Defender had one you couldn't see, but what was the earliest that showed up on screen. Was it Tiger Heli?

I realize this is years since the question was asked, but I recently found that
Scorpion (Zaccaria, 1982) has visible bombs (missiles, really) on the wings
of your ship. You can see 4 to start out, and they disappear individually as
you shoot them. So Tiger Heli certainly wasn't the first, unless you want to
distinguish missiles from bombs.

I don't think that's the type of bombs Daz is talking about. The Eidolon wrote:I realize this is years since the question was asked, but I recently found that

What fellow shmupper Daz is talking about the "smart bomb" that clears the screen of all enemies at once. Both Williams' classic Defender and Stargate arcade uprights had this "smart bomb" functionality from the get-go.Herr Schatten wrote:I don't think that's the type of bombs Daz is talking about. The Eidolon wrote:I realize this is years since the question was asked, but I recently found that

Re: first physical smart bomb
Well, Tiger Heli isn't really that kind of smart bomb either, then. It's a limited area
effect, not full-screen like Defender's. Anyway, all I'm saying is that the idea of
limited-use munitions which can be seen hanging from your ship dates at least back to 1982.

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought there'd be something about how a "smart bomb" was created in real life... heh.

Uh, I'd still say Defender had a smart bomb that predates tiger heli. You have a stock of three, press the bomb button and it nukes the screen. That's a smart bomb in a game and probably the first.DazTM wrote:I know Defender had one you couldn't see, but what was the earliest that showed up on screen. Was it Tiger Heli?

It's not a shmup, it's not force-scrolled. So you lose!Skykid wrote:Uh, I'd still say Defender had a smart bomb that predates tiger heli. Exactly. Why mention "physical" in the context of non-physical code running on a processor?yyr wrote:When I saw the title of this thread, I thought there'd be something about how a "smart bomb" was created in real life... heh.

Another vote for moving this to off-topic based on the topic title.
About Missile Command - can't you blow up your own buildings with missiles if you aren't careful?
I mean, you should be able to.
Anyway, Defender probably is first, should be there on Wiki before Tiger Heli anyway.
Tiger Heli has the first defensively triggered proximity smart bomb though, rite guys?
