I need your help!!

For the life of me I can't remember the name of this great shump I played. It was the late 80s probably 87-88. This is a shooter where when you got power ups they attached to the sides of your ship changing its look. As you got more powerful you would gain additional ships that would attach to the side of you like a wing. I believe you could have 4 of them and they were destoyed very easily. On top of that you had certain weapon systems: homing missile, this large bomb that would shoot slowly and I believe some standard shot. Does anyone know what game I might be talking about? Thanks for your help!!
