Help me choose 3 DC shmups.

Post by neorichieb1971 »

Ok, I'm really thinking about getting some DC shmups. I have a Jap machine.

The ones I already own from memory are -

Ikaruga
Gigawing
Zero Gunner 2

I have never seen -

Mars Matrix
Gunbird 2
Gigawing 2
Border down
Shikigami no shiro 2
Psyvariar 2
Chaos field
Trizeal

So which 3 should be on my wanted list first?

I like shooters to be somewhere in the middle of manic and basic.

Also, did I miss any on the DC. I think thats pretty much all of them isn't it?

Mars Matrix
Gunbird 2
Border Down

Psyvariar 2 is excellent, if you play for score. Otherwise you'd find it boring.

Mars Matrix
Shiki II (although the multi-system ports and the PC version aren't half bad either)
Chaos Field

Methinks:

Shiki 2
Giga Wing 2
Gunbird 2

Though if you're into horzies, sub in Border Down.

What Neon said (except for that bit about Psyvariar 2...)

You can get shiki2 on other systems so I'm giving it less priority (plus I think the three neon mentioned are much better. Chaos Field?! c'mon...

I'd go for Gunbird 2, Mars Matrix, and Border Down, personally. Maybe Psy 2 instead of Border Down if you prefer verts. I don't care for SnS2 or the Giga Wings all that much, but a lot of people seem to like them.

You missed twinkle star sprites on that list! But given the parameters you gave it wouldn't be in the top 3 anyway, besides it also very puzzly!

Since you specifically say you like your shmups in the middle of manic and basic these are the games I'd advise:

***Gunbird 2 (this a given considering you parameters - and a fantastic
game anyway!

*** Shikigami 2 (still lots of bullets but not to manic or anything and it has
a great and addictive buzz system application...

*** Chaos Field (one major boss rush but sometime pretty manic without
going over the top). Look past the avarage graphics and the lack of
high-score saving and you'll have one very enjoyable game!

Reason I didn't mention Border Down is due to you parameters. The game is a MUST-HAVE game though!
Also why not wait a week and a half for the first Trizeal impressions. I'd say the omens are good on this one!.

Hmm. Can't say that I've been around long enough to truly know for sure (even after checking the "Unofficial Shmup Glossary"!), but I'm... still not sure.

Speaking as someone with great appreciation for and little experience with shmups, I would have to recommend Trizeal (I saw that you had posted in the "So, who's getting" thread and seemed interested--I think that it'll be good!). Then, I personally like Psyvariar 2 and Shikigami no Shiro 2, but as others have mentioned, one is sort of good only if you know how it's meant to be played (and you play it that way), and the other is on multiple other platforms (including PS2 for... $10?). So, I suppose that I would round mine out with Chaos Field and Border Down. I've heard that CF is quite challenging to play, and BD is quite challenging to find.

So: Trizeal, Chaos Field and Border Down are my suggestions! :)

(Keep in mind that I currently have only BD, P2 and SNS2, so my experience is quite limited. Trizeal and GigaWing are on the way though, ya yay!)

(Super Laydock replied while I was typing this up!)

Not really a true shmup, but nobody mentioned Bangai-O. It's wicked fun and will have you grinning madly the whole way through!

For the other ones you mentioned, I'd go with Mars Matrix, Shiki II, and Border Down.

Psyvariar 2 is a lot like Garegga in that respect. People would just rather diss what they see as flaws rather than try to understand how the game works and play it accordingly.

Imho:

Ikaruga (because it's god)
Gigawing 2 ('cause it's DC only and not emulated)
Shikigami ('cause...because it's good)

mars matrix, gw2 and border down because..well, you cant find them anywhere else.

also, id reccomend not to emphasise on one category of shmups, by not trying X shooter because its manic, or Y because its old school, you'll be missing alot.

you can try mars matrix on mame to get an idea if youll like it or not.

Dude, if you can, get all of the DC shmups because they're all good. If you only can get three, I would recommend you get Border Down, Mars Matrix & Chaos Field. I think you can get the others on PS2, that's if you can play imports.

Random Question:

I know DC Chaos Field doesn't save your scores, but does it atleast have a stage select? 'Cause that would pretty much make or break a purchase for me.

Thanks for your suggestions guys.

I think Mars Matrix will be my next purchase since most people chose that one.

Border down and Gunbird 2 seem to be highly recommended too. I guess availability will play a part in wether I get those 3 or not. I might opt for Trizeal if I cannot find those 3.

Nope, no stage select. Although I don't recall hearing that the GC version has it either.

Ugh, that's frustrating. Chaos Field looks pretty solid to me, but I'd really like to be able to practice the later stages without much hassle. Is the game short enough that this is not a problem? Or is it all the price of admission?

Yeah, it's about Psyvariar short.

As for getting it in general, well, its field changing is an innovative system, reminding me a lot of Giga Wing's reflector. The whole game is really about milking the bosses (since they make up about as much of the game as in Treasure's Alien Soldier and Stretch Panic) so take that as you will.

If you don't have it, get Bangai-O. It does'nt matter if it's not a "pure" shmup, It's just a must have for any Dreamcast owner.
I even rate it higer than any shmup on that console, and "pure" Shmups is generaly my favorite genre!

No, the flaw is with me---I can't roll. That and I just didn't like the pacing and feel of it at all. Purely an aesthetic choice here. I'm not saying the game is flawed, I just don't like it! 8)

Double post!

Yes, I think there isn't a person here who wouldn't recommend Bangai-O, we were probably just taking the question too literately. Bangai-O is one hell of a great game.

werd, I just get tired of people dissing the game for no good reason my friend. Have to defend it once in a while

I hate bangai-o. I respect it as a good game and I like the wackiness, but the gameplay didn't click with me for reasons I can't recall...I haven't played it in a very long time, maybe I should just try it out again.
