Shmup machine locations list?

Post by BiQ »

A thing that just occured to me (probably to someone else in history too) is that wouldn't it be awesomely awesome if there could exist even a semi-comprehensive list of what shmups are available in public locations and where?

Or does something like this already exist?

Of course, making such a list up and keeping it even remotely up to date would be a huge, community-driven effort. And it would, by practical issues alone, end up being very much on the shoulders of people living in areas that had more lively arcade-shmup scene (= Far East Asia) OR it would be up to date only when some western shmupper-tourists (who would probably also be the biggest beneficiaries of such a list) visited the locations to check them out... or something in-between.

I just think that it'd be very cool to have such a list. Has it ever been tried? I got this idea when thinking that next time that I visit japan I'd like to be able to try out DDPDOJ Black label... and then remembered that various location lists exist in Europe for dance game machines and wondered if it could be true for shmups also...

making such a list for USA and europe might be doable.. but for asia - forget about it!

anyways, only place i saw in japan that had DDP DOJ BL was HEY! in akihabara..

DUDE! groundkontrol is the best arcade ever! Beer + shmups = AWSOME. I have a friend who works their and whenever i go visit the portland area i make sure to hit this place up. Last time i was there they had Battle Garrega, Dragon Blaze, Striker 1945-2 and raiden 2. One of the best arcades i have ever been to .

Another great arcade is Arcade Japan in the LA area. I think its close to the west Covina area right across from MT San Antonio College. Last time i was there (3 years ago) they had dodonpachi, gunbird 2, and striker 1945-2. They have mostly fighting games and music games though. I cant seem to find a website for it though.

The Casino Arcade in London is like a little peice of heaven. Downstairs (away from the fucking fruit machines), you'll find DoDonpachi, Ketsui, Gigawing, Mushihimesama, Progear (with a wonky p1 stick) and a couple more. There's also an AMAZING vegetarian Chinese Restaurant down the road, and a fairly good but pricy games shop. I'd recomend anyone in the UK to make the journey.

I can vouch for these wise words. A mate and I paid a visit last Sunday to the Casino Arcade in London. Being sad b'stards we even took photos!

General layout

Skinny plays Mushi

Fatty plays Ketsui

Bit of a tragedy that in the space of the 4.5 hours we were there, only a handful of people showed (to play fighting games). Definitely gonna head back down when I get a chance. Plus only a quid for three credits on Ketsui!
Aww, thanks for posting those pics. Will have to head back soonish. The only problem I have with this place is that only one cab is sit down (ketsui). I find I'm a bit too tall to play for too long comfortably on the stand ups. Also I suck at stick use. Sigh.

It's for DDR machines, not shmups, but it can be pretty helpful if you're just looking for arcades in your area.

Are there any arcades with shmups on the east side of Washington? You know, the desert part? Or am I the only guy who lives here?

You're probably out of luck, but if it makes you feel any better there aren't that many arcades on the West side of Washington either. :(

That's a very cool site! Nice to see my local, Starbase 1 in San Rafael on there. Last time I was there they had a lot more than was listed too. (Definitely had Strikers 1945 Plus, R-Type, Raiden Fighters and Carrier Airwing.)

There's another cool little couple of machines tucked away in a Mexican Taqueria in Marin County - I'll drive by next time I'm close and get the name if anyone's interested, they have Raiden II and, best of all, a Neo Geo cab with Blazing Star.

Cool, nice pics. I tried rotating the monitor in my Midway cab but I would have had to take the back of the cab off for the bastard monitor to fit

A (the only) Pizza restaurant in Leggett (North California, about 50miles inside the country) has a Raiden Fighters Jet Cab.

But be prepared to be the only one in that pizza cave^^

Also, in "The Inn At The Tides", a famous (location of some scenes from Hitchcocks "The Birds") restaurant in Bodega Bay/California, you can find some older cabs such as an SNK one with Metal Slug 2 and Samurai Shodown in it.

I actually even took a picture^^

Stopped by Ground Kontrol today. Raiden II is definitely still there, as well as Battle Garegga. I didn't glance at the Battle Garegga scores but it doesn't seem like many people play Raiden II seriously judging by the scores. I was ranked "#1" with like 220,000ish  . Hopefully I'll have time to go back to work on my raiden skills with the joystick.

To anyone in Norcal:

The SFSU arcade routinely gets in hard to find shmups. I've seen Dodonpachi, Esp Galuda, and recently Bee Storm there, in addition to more common ones like Raiden Fighters 2 & Jet, and Strikers 3

Good to see Starbase One getting props! They had R-Type 2 ftr.. and don't forget Roadblasters & Heavy Barrel. There was also an RF Jet tourney going when I was there. Cool stuff.

Which place in Marin's got Raiden II?

EDIT: whoops.. SFSU already got props. =) Well, it could always use more!

Here to report another machine siting.

In Beaverton, Oregon at Sunset Bowling Lanes there is a 1945 Plus machine for 25c per credit. Unfortunately they have it set to 2 lives instead of the default 3... wack.

Game-Trader, Landshuter Allee 31, Munich, Germany

- Mushihimesama Futari
- Pink Sweets

Plus some other classics on-demand.

So yeah, if you happen to come to our nice little town you should probably check this place out. It's not an arcade though, rather a game-store with 2 cabs decked out for shmups. ^^

LOL. Thanks for the heads up. Silly me. I assumed 3 lives was default!! You know what they say when you assume...

I'll also mention the 1P wasn't working when I was there last night.

On my flight back to Pittsburgh, PA from Portland, OR I stopped in Minneapolis, MN airport. They have an arcade with Strikers 1945 III if you need to kill some time (I had a 2 hr delay  )
