Used Xbox recommendations

Post by FRO »

I'm looking to buy a used Xbox, but I'm a bit squeamish, given the fact that used consoles are still going for upwards of $125. I've never even had the opportunity to play an Xbox, & I'm mostly buying it to experiment with, so I don't want to spend a whole lot, but I want a working unit. Most of the game stores online either don't sell used Xbox hardware, or you have to dig to find the used consoles. The ones that do sell used Xbox stuff range anywhere from $130 to over $250 for a used Xbox.

Does anyone have suggestions as to where I can get one inexpensively that still works so I could do some experimenting & learning with it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I live in a small town, & the nearest pawn shop is over 60 miles away. Not to mention they all close at the end of the workday, & weekends I can't always get out of town. Add to that the fact that the pawn shops in question always have CRAP for video gaming stuff, & it pretty much all adds up to being not a possibility. Thanks for the reply though - I'd definitely go that route if there was a decent pawn shop within 100 miles of me.

If I were you, I'd just take the plunge and get a modded Xbox. They're quite affordable now and mine is by far the most used machine I've ever owned besides my computers. I've gotten rid of cable TV all together and watch all my television and movies on it sans commercials plus it's packed with arcade shooters amongst other great games.

If you're at all computer savvy you shouldn't have a problem learning how to use one.

My pick for essential xbox games:

Panzer Dragoon Orta (my favorite game on the console, absolutely)
KOTOR
Ninja Gaiden Black
Chronicles of Riddick (if you don't have the PC version)
Halo and Halo 2 (it's ok, but you gotta admit it's kind of required for xbox owners)

For shooters in particular, I can't think of any except for xyanide, which I'm not a big fan of.

Maybe Steel Battalion just for novelty's sake? It's really nerdy, but if you're a nerd like me, well, I couldn't resist it. And, it's a pretty good mech game, in the vein of Mechwarrior 2 and other classic scifi sims like Freespace, to a lesser extent.

I might have added a Splinter Cell game, but that comes out about as often as a Madden now, and it's all the same - sucks for that series.

imo there is no reason to own an xbox if you want to play games. The only thing that system is good for is xbox media center. I've had an xbox for five years, I use it every day... but I've only played three games on it ever. Well, real xbox games... Xbox is good for a home media center + uber emulation. There isn't a single memorable game on the system, which is probably why MS discontinued production immediately following the release of the 360.

If it weren't for the fact the Xbox360 backwards compatablity is a complete joke, I would have told you to forget the OldBox and buy a 360.

Just make sure your Xbox has a Phillips or Samsung drive. Don't get one with a Thompson drive because they suck balls.

Well most of the good exclusives are already listed but I'd add:

Rallisport Challenge 2
Phantom Dust
Kingdom Under Fire: heroes
and Oddworld: Strangers Wrath

All four are excellent and can be found dirt cheap.

Add these to the list:

Gunvalkyrie
Ninja Gaiden (original has all 3 NES titles... Black does not)
Guilty Gear X2 #Reload
Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection
Max Payne
Max Payne 2
Crimson Skies
House of the Dead III
Metal Arms
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Bloodrayne II (serious... this received great reviews everywhere; sleeper hit FTW)
What more can I say I wouldn't be here today if the old school didn't pave the way.

Aside from the stuff others have mentioned I'd recommend The Warriors and the Timesplitters games.

Wow, I realize how old this thread is! I finally did snag an Xbox a few months ago (real cheap, too!), and here's what I have so far:

Gunvalkyrie (cool)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (original)
Lego Star Wars: Original Trilogy
Ninja Gaiden: Black
Knights of the Old Republic

Thanks for the tip on NG, dial911 - I'll have to track down an original copy for the 3 NES titles. I still only have NG2 for NES in original cart form. I also plan on getting GGX2, DOA: Ultimate, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and a couple others I don't recall atm. Would anyone recommend a softmod, or chip?

SSX3SSX3SSX3SSX3SSX3SSX3SSX3

True, it's not an exclusive, but it's the best version :)

Riddick was fantastic, as was Fable. JSRF was decent, not a patch on the DC original. Plenty of good Xbox titles, ports or otherwise.

^^ Meh, not a snowboarding fan. I played enough Cool Boarders w/ the guitarist in my old band to know that

However, I might think about Fable. I've read all over the place that it's pretty great, so I'll add that to the "maybe" list.

*spangs out at the mere mention of Cool Boarders in the same area as SSX*

I've probably played every single game on the original Xbox  apart from the RPGs (Fable excepted).

I recently picked up Burnout 2, OutRun 2, The Warriors, Deus Ex 2 and Far Cry with change from a tenner, so I was quite happy with that.

Enjoying playing through Invisible War again,in my humble opinion this is one game ragged on by Deus Ex fans more for what it isn't than what it is. OutRun 2 is as fun as ever, and Burnout 2 is probably one of my favourite racing games of the last ten years.

My emu discs seems to be about to give up the ghost though, and for some reason, unlike my last chipped box, thos one won't let me install to HD.

Rallisport Challenge 2
Phantom Dust
requoting ! Both are phenomenally good. Phantom dust is incredible.

others :

Metal Wolf Chaos (if you are getting a chipped/regionless machine)
Dreamfall (if you are into narative-y adventures)
Psychonauts
Spikeout (yeah, it's different - but it's still a good beat em up and people are STILL playing it online)

lots of good suggestions in the thread as always that you can't really go wrong with, especially look out for the "surprise" games like Buffy (the first one, the second one is a bit of a let down)

I dunno about Dreamfall - it's quite plodding and you really need to have played The Longest Journey first to make some sense out of it. Masses, masses of dialogue heavy cut scenes though, if that's your thing.

On the same lines, Fahrenheit is a wonderful playthrough if tackled by a group of you in one sitting - it's just as much fun to watch as play, just switch players every time you die.

Also personally recommended:

Otogi 2
Phantom Dust
Metal Wolf Chaos

Actually this reminds me. I have a brand new xbox in storage with a fucked DVD drive. Is there any way of fixing this without getting too technical? It's the best model (I forget what it's called) and apparently their failure rate is "extremely low". I have great luck.
