PSOne Shooters

Post by SheSaidDutch »

Okay since I wont be getting a PCE atm, What are some of the best ports/exclusives for this console?

I used to own a PSX afew years ago, I'm basically thinking of collecting games for this system,

I was thinking of a PSTwo but with all the complaints about the hardware It put me off(I was going to get a PS2 2 years back) and the whole CD reading bussiness :(

I'll mostly be playing PSX games, Should I just get a PSOne instead?, I never had a problem with my PSX years ago.

Also any good 2D games I should get
I only want Shooters, Platformers and maybe some Fighters

Sorry for being a pain  (I tried searching but there Is nothing there, If the old forum threads were there I would look at those)

Castlevania:Chronicles- Seen It going for £8.99, I went down the next day and It was gone

also I'm not a Cave/Psyki(sp) fan

Gradius Gaiden is a must have (though it's jpn only)
The Johnny on the corner was a very sympathetic

My advice is get a Japanese PSTwo, sure the console may not be built like a tank, but you can barely find a brand new PSOne these days anyway.

Also considering the PSOne is not that brilliant hardware for shooters either many of the ports are better on other system. Sure there are a bunch of good exclusive games out there for it, but many of them are hard to track down in decent condition or are expensive.

If you go Japanese the PSTwo has already a bunch of brilliant shooters, and then you can still play PSOne games on it too :). And most importantly almost all of the PSTwo games can still be found brand new, so that you don't have to buy greased/scratched up old used games.

Anyway as for PSOne shooters, R-Type Delta is a must have :)

For me the PS1 is the best platform for shmups apart from the Saturn and the PCE. There are just a ton of good shooters.

In my opinion, the EPSXE emulator renders a real PSX useless due to the much improved graphics. If you have a decent computer maybe you should check it out.

Einhander is awesome, and so is R-Type Delta.

Well EPSXE may work fairly well for 3D games. But 2D graphics are often messed up, filtered and looking strange.

Depends on what video plug-in you're using, and what settings your using. If you don't like the filtered graphics, turn them off.

Please, for the love of [insert thing important to you here], can we please get stickies for 'good games for such and such system'???

Each sticky would allow for continued debate about the top tier games without continuously flooding the forum with the same exact question over and over.

I do not understand why we can have stickies for Trizeal but we cannot have stickies for the most commonly asked questions on this forum.

What bugs me is that every time one of these topics starts, someone starts talking about emulators or says something like "get another system instead" or "use mame" when the topic starter is trying to get recommendations for the system.

If you like slower paced shooters, I recommend R-Types. Excellent ports of the arcade originals. Just as hard as ever. I recommend Xevious 3D + G if you like classic style shooters, especially the original Xevious. Thunder Force V looks better on Saturn, but is still a great addition to the PSX shooter collection.

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-5o- ... 0-2q6.html Brand new. Not hard to track down or expensive.

why buy a PSX when you can have the same thing on your computer, but better, and for free?

2D games look great for me. It depends on what plugins you use, and what you prefer.

I forgot about Thunderforce V. Great game. If you like the other ones you'll definately want this one.

I thought Gradius Gaiden was more expensive than that. Not a bad price. I like Gradius V more though.

BUHA wrote:why buy a PSX when you can have the same thing on your computer, but better, and for free?
1. playing games on the television
2. compatibility. This is the big one.
3. Some games have special programming tricks and don't look right in emulation.
4. The PS One is semi-portable and easier to take on trips than a high end desktop computer
5. Games playable with regular PSX controllers without adapters.
6. If you don't own a PSX, using the emulator is illegal since it needs a copyrighted bios image to work.

Also, whether or not playing games in emulation with spruced up graphics is better is a matter of opinion. It does nothing to change the gameplay and, you need a really fast computer to get the games running at full speed.

oh yeah. I think there should be a sticky with recommend games or a page at the shmups forum with links to reviews and info on the systems. A list of where to get games and reliable ebay sellers would help too.

R-Type Delta and Thunderforce V are both great games. Einhander isn't as good as either of those two, but it's still worth getting. I also recommend R-Types and Raiden Project since they both come with two great classics. And don't miss out on Geki-Oh Shooting King. It's a fun Raiden-esque overhead shooter, and it's pretty cheap (costed me $7).

Yeah I was going to ask a mod If we could have stickies, As I said If we had the information I wouldn't just post another topic and get on peoples nerves :) .

I'm rather surprised at the price at play asia, (well with shipping etc thats a different story)

Over here in my local stores some used PSOne games go form £10-15

How much does Zanic Neo cost?

I've played epsxe before, I found It rather easy to set-up myself.

I wouldn't recommend epsxe to a new psx owner. It's a bit more difficult to get it running perfect than mame/genesis/snes/etc. emulators, you wouldn't know the perfect configuration to strive for. Also compatibility issues...Metalslug glitches out in the second stage for me even though I have the emu set up to be pretty perfect. Dodonpachi and Donpachi run without music...

Zanac Neo is part of Zanac X Zanac which costs from 85-125 USD. The more expensive prices were from a US seller that overprices things a bit, though.

as much as im all for emulation, saying "why would you get the system when you can emulate it?" is just plain retarded, please dont bother next time.

From what I heard, this might happen when you play them with the PS-X-Change 2 bootdisc too (at least with Donpachi anyway). But the game is playable, so I still plan to get the PSX Donpachi anyway. When or if I do get it, please remind me to do a heads up on the audio if I forget to do so. Both Gradius Gaiden and Twinbee Dexlue pack work perfectly with the disc, no problems.

But then the first page of the forum would be glutted with stickies...it would be nice to have at least one index sticky that could reference all of the common stuff. I know TF was working on an index on the old forum; I'll check w/ him again.

(Can't speak to the Trizeal thing, but I think anything beyond 3-4 is excessive, regardless of the content..)

The best idea I've seen is a "newbie section" or something to that effect, where there's nothing but stickies and newcomers can have some of their questions answered that way. I've seen it on other forums, and I thought it was a good idea. I'm surprised nobody's brought it up yet.

Restricting to what I've actually played on PSX, my recommendations would be:

True Exclusives:
- Gradius Gaiden
- R-Type Delta
- Sanvein (arena shooter -- there was a thread on it recently if you want to know more)
- Zanac x Zanac (well, Zanac Neo is exclusive, anyway)

Console Exclusive:
- G. Darius

Available Elsewhere:
- Parodius Deluxe Pack
- R-Types (if you're into that sort of thing)
- Thunderforce V (Saturn has *much* cleaner graphics; PSX has boss-rush mode)

And then stuff I like on other platforms but haven't been able to play on PSX:
- Do Don Pachi
- Don Pachi
- Gradius Deluxe Pack
- Raiden...DX is usually recommended
- Soukyugurentai

I don't think it would be too bad:

-forum rules
-top 25
-best games for the saturn
-best games for the psx/ps2

Of course DC would be nice, but these two (playstation and saturn) are the ones that come up the most often, and always get quality responses that then fade away only to be repeated two months down the road (or less). I actually think these are the two most occuring topics to arrise on this forum. Aesthetics aside, shouldn't we address that in some way?

Well the prices on PSOne games really varies. Generally games that have had recent re-releases go cheap ($20-30), while some of the rarer ones you will have to hunt on Ebay for months and pay +$80. I'm trying to find some old PSOne games myself, unfortunately shmups is a niche genre plagued by Ebay profiteering leeches ;)

Anyway just noticed that no one has mentioned, X2 No Relief , a pretty decent shooter and it is PSOne exclusive :)

How about Stickies have there own section in-between Shmups chat and HighScores :?:

Then we can add suggestions and hopefully It'll be a good resourse :)

In thinking about the best games for PS1, it might make sense to break the issue down into the two obvious categories: horis and verts. The PS1, it seems to me is especially strong in the former.

Perhaps the best horis on the system are:
gradius gaiden
harmful park
einhander
r-type delta
r-types
thunderforce v
though there are plenty of other solid ones.

I'm less confident about what the best verts are off the top of my head. Will have to give it some thought. Any suggestions?

What's the deal with Takumi's Night Raid? When it came out Kiken made some vids, it was shorly talked about, then just disappeared. Now that I look for a copy, there's not one to be found anywhere. What does this game go for now? Apparently no one picked it up when it released.

noone mentioned strikers 1945 part 2 pal release or jap.

the pal one is pretty decent but some complain about the speed (i honestly don't know any better so it's fine by me) it also has a tate mode as well as fixed and wiggle mode. only problem is no hiscore saves....

the jap version apparently has both tate and saveable hiscores but means importing etc
