If you have watched the classic otaku produced Gunbuster anime series that came out during the Original Video Animation (OVA) era in Japan circa 1988, in Episode 6, there's mention of the Earth Defense Force (EDF) using an ultimate weapon against the "Space Monsters" armada -- the G.H.B. -- Gravity Hole Bomb. This weapon is also found in the CPS2/DC GD-Rom versions of Mars Matrix as well.
Of course, both G.H.B. use such exotic "black hole" technology as the basis for use as a weapon... ^_~
Is the G.H.B. weapon portrayed in Mars Matrix a subtle reference and/or nod to Gunbuster anime? ^_~
You might recall that I was the original thread poster about the hidden reference to THX1138 found in DDP-DOJ PCB and PS2 import disc (the DDP-DOJ countdown timer has the same design as of the old-styled back-lit numeric countdown timers shown in the original version of THX1138 movie).

A handful of other shmups have used variations on the "black hole" weapon...Darius Gaiden's bomb and Gradius Gaiden's "gravity bullet" come most immediately to mind. I don't know enough about anime to say whether or not Gunbuster was the one to bring that particular bit of sci-fi into the mainstream though.
