I usually start several feet from the screen when I am playing. After a few deaths and resets, I seem to move closer So close that me nose is touching the screen! Well ok not that close but close enough.
We had joked last weekend that the worse you do, the closer to the screen that you get!
I like to sit pretty far away from the screen, as I start missing overall onscreen movement of patterns when I am too close. This is certainly not the way they play in the arcades, though, but it just works for me.
I zone my concentration in and out depending on the level of space I have to manoevre. If I'm tightly zoned by tons of bullets I concentrate on hitbox only. If I have space I start looking around more.
If your far away from the TV/screen you cannot possibly get through tight spots because your hand/eye coordination is usually over comphensating.
The dualshock2 didn't help one bit either, nor did the stupid blurry scaled sprites.

I can't really see how it's possible to play manics with without your nose pushed against the screen. The optimum distance for me is about 25cm. It sure as hell isn't good for my eyes, I can tell you that.
Yah. Well I as well play a PS2 pad for Mushihime-sama (and achieved a 13th-ish place on the Maniac Scoreboard) but I play it on a TATE'd tv that is set down on it's side on the floor of my bedroom. The TV itself is about a 21" but does the job for TATE compared to the crazy amount of blur Mushihime-sama has. I usually sit no more than 2 feet away, with a pillow under my arse. I got's a wooden floor. I find myself edging a little closer every now and then, but too close is bad.
STG Weekly!, 1cc's, twitch, XBL: DJ Aquazition The in-game papers prove that being the paperboy is actually a position of the greatest importance,

I have my chair pretty close to the TV right now but it could be closer for sure. I want to try and recreate the arcade feel as much as possible, and you need to be damn close to the screen for that to happen.

So if your struggling in your shmupping, make sure your not handicapping your experience
Sounds about right. The game was made w/ a cab in mind, w/ the players face only a few feet away, along w/ a stick & 3 buttons. If you play w/ anything else, you are basically not playing it the way it was meant to be played. Of course, not everyone has that opportunity though, so we get as close as we can.

Which games are you playing? Considering 28" screens are standard in Japan, I would go out on a limb and say that's the intended size. Then again, you can grow accustomed to playing something on the "wrong" display as well. Same w/ controllers. Of course it all comes down to preference. I remember when TWE would come over and ask for the DC pad to play Ikaruga.

I dream of playing Mushi on a 28" monitor in a cab.
The intensity of a good manic keeps me sat up right anyway, I Can't play a manic in the reclining position. My scope of vision needs to be in the thick of the action!
What cab you got anyway Bloodflowers? Know where I can get one? (im in the UK)

I usually sit 6 feet away from my TV, and I don't move forward for any game.
My eyesight is bad enough thanks to years of gaming/reading. I blame Nintendo for failing to release backlit Game Boys (until 2005) and teachers who assigned too much work.
