What is the best cab for shmupping ?
What is the best cab for shmupping ?
I wonder what cab you people prefer to play shmups on ?
Also I'd like to know if an Egrett III would be the choice over an Egrett II considering I mainly play shmups.
Thanks for your time !

Astro City is #1 for price and performance. You don't need an Egret III unless you plan to buy expensive Naomi/Atomiswave/Taito Type X systems and play @ 31khz.Michaelm wrote:I wonder what cab you people prefer to play shmups on ?

Ok, thanks ! Especially about the Egrett info !Dave_K. wrote:Astro City is #1 for price and performance. You don't need an Egret III unless you plan to buy expensive Naomi/Atomiswave/Taito Type X systems and play @ 31khz.
So let's say cash is not the real issue in this would an Egrett II be the choice ?
Or does the Astro City's monitor rotates as easily too ?
Or does it more have to do with compatibility of older PCB's video refresh rates or what is that thing that makes the picture freak out ?

if you have the cash and place buy 2 cab's (1 hor, 1 ver)
Astro, new astro, egret2, ok baby, pony....are all great cab's, but they are all 15khz only or 15,24khz.
but on most of them u can swap the chassis with a f.e. WEI-YA chassis and they will become multisync (15/24/31KHZ)
Egret3, Atomiswave SD, Blast city, NNC.... are multisync cab's, but to be very honest the low res preformance is not as good as on low res cab's......
Space for one? Get an easy rotate - this is your #1 most important requirement. Don't be fooled into buying an "easy" rotate where you lift and replace the screen. Someone here should be able to point you in the right direction in terms of a true rotating screen cab.
After that - personal preference.. I personally don't like playing on JP cabs - they just feel all wrong, take up more space too (deeper + chair). Most of the other people here love them. Because they're wrong and will cross the road in front of trucks if Japanese people did it

Seeing as you're from Holland I'd say go and check out the forum at nozomi.nl.
There are several cab enthousiasts there.
The OK Baby does not have a rotating mechanism.
A Masterplay cabinet made by 'N Styl from France does have a rotating mechanism. They're cheap, but not Japanese so they're black and weigh a ton. They're not as pretty as candies, but by far one of the best looking non-Japenese cabs you can find. They're equiped with leaf switch sticks so be prepared to lose another 100 euro on brand new sticks and buttons.
It is a cheap option you should keep in mind. If you got more dough and not much space and/or only want one you could take either a Astro City or an Egret 2. The question is from where and how are you going to get it.
Check marktplaats.nl (a dutch marketplace ebay-ish Dutch site)on regular occasions and consult us for opinions here or on nozomi.nl or killercabs.com (English site)
On this site you get more info on shmup specific details like indeed tate rotation mechanisms and what sticks are best for shmups and alot of other surprising knowledge.

This is the single biggest problem on JP cabs in my opinion - you can't fit sticks designed for metal panels to most of them, and that means no Suzo 500s without an ugly hack, and that already means you're making compromises.D wrote:On this site you get more info on shmup specific details like indeed tate rotation mechanisms and what sticks are best for shmups and alot of other surprising knowledge.
Nothing else comes even slightly close to them, however - disclaimer: I have not yet found a cab with Seimitsus in.

If you could only have one cab, I'd go with the egret2. Easy rotate, plenty of room, chassis is easily swapped for 31khz capability. The downside is price.
If you're willing to sacrifice some space, an egret1 would do just fine and be way cheaper. While I haven't verified it; I think you should be able to do the same chassis swap in that cab.

Can someone point out why? As far as I know the monitor autoswitches to 15 khz.Radiant wrote:noMichaelm wrote: Or does the Astro City's monitor rotates as easily too ?

Wouldn´t a multisync chassis in an egret 2 result in worse video quality?
Or does it have something to do with the native monitors in those multisync cabs?

I guess the question is here about differences between the tubes of lo-res monitors and tubes found in multisync monitors. I always took this fact for granted. Now I also demand an explanation, wtf?

Maybe the multisync monitors lowest res is 480p and when 240p is fed, the pixels are doubled and displayed on 4 pixels of 480p resolution.
It's late and I hope this makes sense. I wonder wtf is going on with multisync monitors when feeding a low res signal.
*confused and curious*
ok thanx.zakk wrote:Only 15/24.sven666 wrote:can somone with an egret 2 confirm that the original monitor is indeed capable of multisynch (15,24,31khz) or is it only dual synch (15 & 24khz) ???
I can't remember if it auto-syncs or if you need to move a jumper for 24
strange, i was under the impresion it had the same monitor as the astro city (which can handle 31khz aswell with the proper chassi)

It CAN handle 31khz with a chassis swap. If you meant 'can the tube handle 31khz if you swap the chassis' the answer is yes. That's not what you asked, however

thats exactly what i asked..?zakk wrote:

anyways, thanx for the info.
