Misterious Japanese Arcade shooter lost in time

Post by bonaccorsi »

I am 38 years old, and I have a wish - to play again an ancient japanese shoother that I played when I was a kid. I really dont know the name or the manufacturer. I will try to describe it below.

This shooter is very old... I remember to play in the same time with Space Invaders and Polaris here in Brazil...

You control a ship or canon. It shoot up. Theres no plenty of ships on the upper site, only one enemy per time. The enemy ship go down, stop and start to shoot LOTS AND LOTS of ray guns. The enemy does not try to follow you. He does not change the pattern of the ray bullets. You must try to move you ship, fire a single shoot and escape from the enemy fire, destroyng it. Possibly it is the first metodic shoother of all times!

Theres no colors, only your ship, the enemy ship, your single shoot and the enemy rays going down.

From time to time, a mother ship arrives, and a energetic ray replenish your ship energy.

Anyone has a hint about this misterious game...

Thanks for your time,

What does this mean?

Anyhow, Ozma Wars looks interesting (still is holy hell on my ears though O_O ), but I doubt it is our mystery game...enemies do waver about the screen (they don't track you though of course), don't seem to fire that much, and there is more than one at a time. The first ship that appears (looks like Space Battleship Yamato, don't you think) is friendly, and you should try to let its ray touch you.

Actually not a bad looking game. Sonically...argh

Arcadia & Ed, thanks for the help!

It is Ozma Wars!!!

I believe the time passed created some confusion into my mind, and I did not described the game exactly like it was...

Anyway, I played it on Mame, and it was very fun to play it again.

I am only missing the sound of the Yamato mothership recharging the energy of my ship. I remember that the sound of the beam was very impressive, a very loud sound in the arcade...

I wish all the best to you both, you made me feel like a young boy again

Isn't that a SNK game and look like it might be playable on a vectrex? I think I remember playing that game.

Yeah, I realized it had to be Ozma Wars when the boss-type critter goes scurrying across the screen (right to left)... :P

alysa: Yes, it's a SNK game. I bet you could program a version for the Veccy, indeed.

I am quite impressed at the variety of graphics, quite nice for a game this old. I am getting better at it, but the scoring seems off - I scored higher when I got stuck at the ship that sends out lots and lots of tiny craft (if you don't shoot it from the center quickly, you will not be able to beat it without getting hit) than when I passed it!

Anyhow, I am interested to hear that it's missing a sound...I wonder if it's missing a sample, or perhaps the sound hasn't been emulated and the MAME developers did not know this.

When I played Ozma Wars in the brazilian arcades, in the beggining of the 80s, it was a very impressive game, with lots of sprites at the same time in the screen... It is a very challenging game, even in these days...

About the loud sound of the recharging beam of the Yamato mothership, maybe it was only the rich imagination of a kid or maybe my memory is with some deep trouble...

By the way, a close friend of mine is a big fan of SNK, and he really enjoyed about my discovery about this game... He told me that he will make a t-shirt with the Ozma Wars and SNK logo on it (the first SNK logo, with a blue and green S). Hehehehe!
