Shmupretiation month at Team Fremont

Post by Thunder Force »

Team Fremont is a crew of older gamers with a cult following, who host a website and an independent internet radio/podcast show. (They've also been seen at events such as the Midway Gaming Classic.)

I've noticed they've been giving nice intermittent coverage of casual shmupping for some time now on their weekly show, so they deserve this shout-out from Shmups Forum, as there are some folks here who may enjoy their content. Specifically this week, in coordination with another generally shmup-friendly indie podcast Broadcast Gamer, they are self-promoting a "National Shmupretiation Month" :) focusing on consecutive weeks of shmup-oriented talk and other related community content.

Of particular interest to some here may be their upcoming "Shmup-Off" challenge, a friendly competition (just for fun, don't expect prizes) apparently focused around how quickly you can learn and try to 1CC a random shmup which is new to you (or something like that - the rules don't seem clear right now)...

Anyone interested may wish to follow the links above to the show and site. (note: Team Fremont's "Drunken Gamers" podcast contains some explicit language)

Heh, I'm partially responsible for TFL's rekindled shmup love. They had a get together last month and I brought a ton of stuff to play like Radiant Silvergun, Souky, Mushihime-Sama and Espgaluda and well, now they're addicted. :D

I ended up starting a giant Shmup thread which pretty much is just regurgitating all the awesome info I've gleaned from here (I'm doing my best to give credit where it's due). I'm still in the process of writing it all up so it's very unfinished.

They nominated me to lead the Shmup-Off competition, which I'm still in the process of figuring out how it's gonna work. MC Wilson from Broadcast Gamer suggested I assign everyone a random game and they see how far they can get on 1 credit so that's probably how it will be. I decided there will be a secondary competition centered around Castle Shiki 2 since it's a cheap game most people shouldn't have trouble finding it. It's all just for fun so come on and join us![/url]

Thats quite a good read that thread there. Reminds me of when I first got into DDP and then saw the LAOS replay which just floored me.

Some of the money those guys have spent in the past month is unbelievable

There was some talk of actually getting together, but we're really intending this to just be done over the forums. At the end of March, I'll just have everyone post their scores with how far they got and maybe a picture if they're able to take one.

This is a great idea, and we're adopting it. I'm spreading it to the few cool boards at gfaqs (the Sega boards namely), and my friends will probably all do something. We get together every Thursday usually to play fighting games/LAN games and watch movies, but we could devote one or two Thursdays in the month of March to shooters. We could have 3 shooters going at the same time in the main room, with 3-8 people playing at any given time. I own a fair number of shooters, most of which no one has played but me and maybe one of my roommates, so there's plenty of subject matter to throw around ^_^

'Dunno how they're runnin' without any bot-fucks, but whatever; run with it.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for checking out the podcast and mentioning it on these great forums. I've been a lurker here for some time and appreciate the awesome resource.

We've got some cool stuff lined up for our so-called "National Shmuppreciation Month". We're going to have some interviews with developers, guest segments, and all around dirty shmup love. Hilden's also cooking up some custom "shmup theme songs" for the show. Also, we're going to have an announcement about something big happening at this year's Midwest Gaming Classic.

Thanks again!

Hey Guys,

Not sure if you heard it or not, but on our latest episode we had an announcement of a new Dreamcast shmup, Dal Force. It's being published by GOAT Store Publishing: http://www.goatstore.com/publishing/

They've done many other games, many of which may not look like "Dreamcast quality" games. However, in the interview, Dan Loosen (head of GSP) assured us that Dal Force will stack up nicely against recent Dreamcast releases.

As soon as we get screenshots and a beta demo from them, we'll be sure to post about them.

Also...

Dan Loosen also runs the Midwest Gaming Classic (www.midwestgamingclassic.com). This year, they're having a huge shmup tournament which will be officiated by Twin Galaxies (www.twingalaxies.com). From what he told us, there will be a ton of prizes (modded consoles, JAMMA sticks, and cash).

To hear the episode, hit this link:

Again, thanks for checking out our Shmuppreciation Month stuff. We hope you're enjoying it.

Are the shows just with some shmup related stuff or is one of the shows about shmups only?

And when will you fill in the highscoers and 1ccs in the thread announcing the shmupretiation month where the players who participated in both contests are already listed?

Each show in March had shmup-related segments, but there are other things we need to talk about as well for various reasons. That's why there were no "shmup-only" episodes.

I believe Savory is going to update the OP at the very end of March.

Nice interview, I broke a lifelong habit and actually listened to a *cast.

Of course, first I downloaded the wrong one, and listened all the way through, wondering where the interview was. The Midwest guy thinks the DC is /the/ shmup console? For shame ;)

Just one thing to add, for the Fremont guys, if you add any links to the forum or anything, please use 'shmups.system11.org' - the forum.shmups.com one is the legacy address - due to problems administering the domain, this is now the primary address (which I can actually like, change, when I need to...)
