Yes, DCX works. That means you can play ALL shoot 'em ups on your DC, regardless of where they were made*. :)

*To play PAL games you'll have to switch them to 60Hz; I think most DC games have an option for this

Let's see, I think the US release shooters are

Mars Matrix
Cannon Spike
Bangai-O
Giga Wing
Giga Wing 2
Gunbird 2

Yes, DC-X works for all import needs... Wonderfully I might add. Some copies of PAL Rez have issues on US systems, but I haven't heard of any other problems.

Japan release shooters

Ikaruga
Border Down
Chaos Field
Psyvariar 2
Twinkle Star Sprites
Radirgy
Under Defeat
Shikigami no Shiro 2
Zero Gunner 2
Trizeal

And I have no idea which of these were released in the PAL regions =/ If I'm missing any, anyone feel free to correct me.

Edit: I know there have been some unofficial releases, like Drill and Last Hope (coming out soon), but I don't know how many, and I haven't played any of them aside from the Drill Demo. Also, Trigger Heart Exelica is scheduled for release in February, and Karous is scheduled for March I think.

DCX works well, and I would say that it is a necessity if you want to play quality shooters on the DC. Many of the American releases, such as Mars Matrix, Gunbird 2, and the Giga Wing series are hard to come by unless you are willing to make some sacrifices--either pay big bucks for a used copy on eBay or make an exception when it comes to collectability. For example, the only copy of Giga Wing I was able to find a year ago had a prestine disk, but a mangled instruction manual. From a collectors standpoint it's junk, but I just wanted to play the game--and for $7 it wasn't a bad deal.

The Japanese market is where you will find the most quality shooters, and you can buy a decent number of them brand new. Rajirugi and Under Defeat are two good titles (with the latter being the better of the two), and I'm fairly sure you can still get Trizeal brand new as well. Furthermore, don't forget that there is the possibility of two more professionally produced shooters coming out soon. Trigger Heart Excelica is confirmed toward the end of February, and Karous is a definitite possibility for March 8 (although Milestone has yet to make it official).
