Saturn and Dreamcast on new LCD tv

Post by beam »

Is there a way to make the low resolution games (especially saturn or dreamcast) playable on a standard lcd tv ?
On these tv these games are a pixel fest and the cinematics are horribles.

There's the magic vga box who may be able to deinterlace the picture but it is s-video and i fear the result would be awful.

There's the xrgb2+ or 3, which may add scanlines, but there's no shop who sell it and i'm not sure of the results (they are made for newer systems (ps2, xbox). Moreover I would need japanese rgb cables.

Does somebody has been able to play those system on an lcd tv ?

Your question does not make sense, as a standard LCDTV should be capable of playing low resolution (15khz/480i) and high resolution (31khz/480p). If the question is how do you play these consoles through the component input (Y/Pr/Pb) of the LCDTV, then you need an RGB->Component Transcoder. Then just use a scart cable for each system (or DC VGA box for 480p).

Currently I am using RGB for both of them but low resolution games are really ugly on the lcd tv.
On crt these games are enjoyable but not on lcd. They are not designed to be played on higher resolution screens. What I am missing is either some way to upscale the picture or to add artificical scan lines to limit the blockiness.
I can't use a native dc vga box because some games I am playing are not vga compatible.

Thanks for your fast reply.

If that is all you are after, then the XRGB2 or XRGB2+ or XRGB3 is what you want.

a vga box for the dc will help out if that lcd tv is a HD tv.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Thanks, I'm looking for a used xrgb2 or xrgb2+ now..
I can't use dc vga box because some games don't display properly with it.

What games? Gigawing, Rainbow six and Dino Crisis? You seriously can't lock yourself out of all the remaining good games (and shmups) that work on VGA just because a couple of other games won't work with it. And a VGA cord will only cost you 12 dollars at jandaman.com
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

My faves dc games are bangaioh and gunbird 2 and both are not vga compatible :(

I might pick a vga cable and a 2nd dc when Trigger Exelica is out to play tate on a crt.

For the moment I can't play my sat games. Assault Suit Leynos 2 is ugly, Guardian Heroes is a pixel fest when it zooms in and out etc

Don't blame lcs hd screens for this. It always was a pixel fest. This game is best played as far from the screen as possible

Works fine, just ugly and stretched
Rainbow six
Rogue Spear was better anyway (especially the multiplayer) and that works great through VGA
and Dino Crisis?
Was thinking more like Bangai-O, Gunbird 2, Psychic Force 2012, and Airforce Delta. I can't think of much else even half-decent that can't at least be forced into VGA.

Can this game be forced? I was really looking forward to playing this in VGA. Does it run flawlessly? How do you force games into VGA?
Would it be possible to cheat Ferrari F355 to think it is not running in VGA, thus having the wide screen option available?
The wide screen option is disabled when you boot in VGA. Very annoying.
