Any good cell-phone mini shmups worth the d/l?
This question is aimed at our international shmuppers who have those cool Japanese cell phones and for the USA cell phone downloadable mini games market as well:
Any good cell-phone mini shmup titles worth the d/l? (Would this apply to those international cell phones using CDMA-based or GSM-based carriers?)
You'd think that such a modern-day cell phone would at the very least have a better frame-rate than the cell phones released a few years back, right? Better frame rates = smoother game play, of course. ^_~

I was flipping through the July 2004 Tips 'N' Tricks magazine and found another old cellphone shmup based title called "Brave Shot" on page 86. It was distributed by Square Enix Mobile through Verizon Wireless' "Get It Now" service. Seeing that Verizon has been absorbed by AT&T nowdays, that former name is no more.
How's the gameplay of this cellphone shmup title of Brave Shot btw?

My own Razr V3m (which I turned on for the first time in months a few days ago) works just fine, although I can't get the catalog for the online games from where I am right now (will try again in a moment). I think it still works though.
Galaga isn't bad, though it's not like it's lacking portable versions. It suffers from the usual cell phone thing where you can't move and shoot at the same time, but I usually stop to shoot in Galaga anyway. It's also missing some sounds from the original (still has the classic opening theme and beam up sounds, though). Other that that it's a very good port. I got it for more casual play when I go places I can't bring my GBA or DS, but I like the GB b/w, GBA non 50th, and DS ones better, though the cell phone one does look better than those ports.
There's a series called skyforce (skyforce/skyforce reloaded, etc) that is developed for phones. Probably the best there is for stg's on your phone. I would suggest having a pocket PC phone to play it though as it's got some pretty hefty requirements (as far as phone games go). A good dpad on your phone is a must too.
Overall though, I say stick to console, arcade, or PSP. While skyforce is probably the best for the platform, most phones have a crappy dpad (if they even have a dpad).
What sucks is I'd really like to play more skyforce but can't bear trying to control it on my phone. Maybe I can play via PPC emulator on PC =p

Perhaps try NEScube v2.2, and MeBoy 1.6, if you have a good enough Java phone to run them at a decent speed. These are Java emulators for NES and GBC titles, which typically are simple enough to enjoy and kill some time with on a cellphone, and there are plenty of shmups for both.
There is also a pretty decent native cellphone version of R-Type out there, at least from the looks of the demo I tried.

I only have one cell phone game, and it's not a shmup, but I think it's a lot of fun. It's called "Metal Gear Solid Mobile". Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyCTSCtqTyA
I think it might be only for Verizon customers though...

That (at least some METAL GEAR) shows up in the games listing for my v3m, but I think it'll likely run terribly on that phone.Daedalus wrote:I only have one cell phone game, and it's not a shmup, but I think it's a lot of fun.
