"Epic" SHUMPS

Post by jpolz »

Name some SHMUPS that have that "epic" feel: grave/dark story line, orchestral musical score, very gritty feeling....almost cinematic. Games along the lines of:

-Radiant Silvergun
-Gradius V
-Silpheed: TLP
-R-Type Final

Let's here some more.

Ikaruga.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

IMO, Under Defeat fits this bill somewhat well. For me at least.

Such an awesome experience.

Axelay and X-Multiply, definitely.

Soukyugurentai achieves this to a large extent, too.

G-Darius defeats everything. I once (in a drunken stupor, urged on by equally drunk heathen friends - don't judge me!) credit fed the whole game and was blown away by the epic melancholy nature of the ending. It's helped massively by the music, with epic synths breaking out all over the place. You will see the creation of new lives.

Garegga? It has a gritty feel.

Ikaruga because of the gave sort of helpless atmosphere.

Sexy Parodius. Because flying pigs, and women straddling missles just oozes the word 'EPIC'

Definitely Ikaruga though. It's just too bad that the game doesn't have any cool cutscenes in between levels and after the game.

Would be cool, but have you seen any of the concept art? I can understand them not wanting to put cutscenes in. Plus I think that never hearing or seeing shinra or the other characters adds to the oppressive atmoshere.

I agree, G Darius has an epic feel to it, mostly because of the bosses, but also because of the music and the action that takes place in the background.

For me, I got to say Radiant Silvergun and Layer Section. Both seem longer then the average shooter and have awesome atmospheres and music.

Good point. And yes, I've seen the art for the Ikaruga. It's fantastic if you ask me.

Viper Phase 1, especially the battleships level, though the whole game feels more "serious" than anything else imo. those explosions, that music... great stuff 8)

I don't get to play it that much but, Guardic Gaiden comes to mind, aka Guardian Legend..

If that's not Epic, I don't know what is.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Philosoma. Granted, not in the same league as most of the others mentioned, but definitely epic in scope & presentation.

Ikaruga (its pure.. )

Radiant Silvergun (you know why :P )

XMULTIPLY (like the Aliens movie^_^)

dodonpachi Daioujou (because of its Soundtrack and the great apocalypse
feeling which is contained in the last stage)

Layer Section (due to the great sound and plot. I just like to enter the atmosphere and to approach slowly the core of the planet)

Guwange (greatest atmosphere of ancient japan ever. I just love it though the game itself is not my favourite in Cave-stuff)
