good question or not???

Post by CHI »

from reading Never_Scurred recent thread (the border down one, pretty interesting too), i cant stop thinking about this question.....

HAS ANY GAMES COMPANY PRODUCED A SHMUP/GAME THAT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO 1CC? OR EVEN IMPOSSIBLE TO FINISH WITH CONTINUES?

also, was there a shmup/game released without a continue feature?
i remembered back in london, gradius III was mostly like that in the arcades = no continue feature.....

I think for every shooting game there is at least one maniac who will practice it to perfection, no matter how hard and cheap. Even ridiculously difficult games like Gradius III, Rezon or second loop Dodonpachi Daioujou have been beaten.

I think the only shooters that have not been 1CC'd are those that are endless, such as Galaga or Xevious.

And your right, Gradius has no continues. A lot of older shmups don't.

I might be wrong but I think Galaga '88 hasn't got a continue feature. Don't want to say it's hard to 1cc, never played it long enough.

I'm still racking my brains on this one... :?:

Is there one that's never ever been 1CC'd by anyone?

Perhaps Gemant knows

There are shmups without continue feature, for instance Recca.

There could be a shmup like that, but it must be a very bad one with incompetent testing or no testing at all. The interesting about shmups is that the harder they are, the more complicated the whole fairness factor must be to keep throughout the game. Look at the nasty Ketsui DOOM patterns that fly in all directions - it`s incredibly hard for the brain to follow, but obviously possible. A shmup that is impossible to 1cc must have some sort of unpassable barrier, a totally closed bullet barrage or something - or that Veritex boss.

The second question is different though; a shmup that hasn`t been 1cced before? That too must have been so boring or bad that noone minded playing it seriously.

I doubt you'll find a decent japanese shmup that's impossible to complete, or hasn't been completed by anyone but there could well be some european or american games that fit this description due to lack of playtesting. As I remember Airwolf on the c64 (not quite a shmup, but it had some shooting) had a wall on stage 3 that was inpenetrable without an invincibility cheat. The c64 Jeff Minter game Iridis Alpha has a stupid bug on most copies that would make it nearly impossible to complete, and Mama LLama (another c64 Minter game) is well known to be nearly impossible to finish 100% due to a time limit problem. None of these games are really proper shmups but i imagine there are some proper western shmups with similar flaws that would make them unfinishable.

The PC Engine version has no continues, the arcade version has a dip switch setting to allow continues up to the last stage, once on the last stage the continues go out the window.

Namco Museum 50th Galaga 88 has no continues as well.

I am shit at games but I found that it did not matter how many continues I had I could not get very far on Viewpoint or Last Resort.

Other people have 1cc'ed both I think.

I can't imagine too many people have 1cc'ed Ibara

Impossible to 1cc or finish w/o continues? The game that comes to mind is Hype for the MSX. I don't think that game has an ending.

Alot of very old Compile games for the MSX too. I've seen the endings for Guardic, Gulkave, and Final Justice but only after using some trainer patches. It's possible to beat Guardic w/o cheating, but the others are just beyond human skills to finish.

I don't think anyone 1cced Radio Zonde. Of course it's "possible" but what does "possible" mean anyway?

I think Cybernoid on the NES comes close.

Insanely hard with Turrican-style damage (your ship's life meter saps away rapidly with the slightest collision). If anyone can 1cc that, let me know.

I'd agree w/ that one wholeheartedly. I own it & have only played it a handful ot tiems. Major frustration awaits anyone who dares play that game.

Not true at all. Three people here have 1CCed Radio Zonde using different ships and different routes. Japanese players have 1LCed it with all ships and no-missed it with Mahilo (replays). I think the game's reputation for difficulty comes from obscurity, intricacy, and the stage 1 boss; it's not as hard as it might seem.

Edit: The linked replays are game input files. Sorry if you don't like to run Windows...

Ah okay, I thought of this title after a discussion on youtube but you must be right. Gotta watch these replays when I get home. Yeah it was really after seeing stage 1 boss that I thought it was impossible... you never stop learning :D

RotateMe, it's not really that hard at all. I can nearly pull it off too.
