I'd love to see a Ketsui replay too. Level 3 & 4 is doing my nut in! I'm actually starting to think this is a lot harder than Dai-Ou-Jou. :(

I actually just ripped this. I've only got Level 3 online at the moment. Was looking for someone to host, as a 350 MB shmup replay isn't the type of thing Classic Gaming likes to host. I've got Battle Garegga and ESPRade I can rip and put somewhere as well. We need a replay FTP. :(

Maybe we could get a DC++ hub up, like the GoForBroke hub the SRK guys have up for fighting game replays.

I was thinking of posting the same request yesterday, Trevor! I did a little bit of searching on google, but came up with some dead links. I was kind of afraid to post the request here, for fear of being shot down with a "did you search for it?!?!?!?"

If someone has one on their HD, could I possibly send you a cd-r to burn it on?

You can temporarily download stage 3 from Japanese Gaming. It didn't come out so hot when I ripped it, but it should serve it's purpose. If someone can give me some better pointers for Auto Gordian Knot, I don't mind redoing it.

Again -- we need an FTP server. If I still lived in Japan with my 100/10 connection... :(

Those who don't mind P2P swarming apps like BitTorrent can use this. If you wish to upload your torrents to it, send me a PM requesting your screenname added to the DB, and I'll grant upload capability, and then you can share replays to your heart's content.

Whether or not anyone (besides myself) chooses to use this facility is entirely up to them. Personally, I prefer BT since I've had varying degrees of success downloading from eDonkey2K and DC++.

Yeah, maybe BT is the way to go. I'll wait 'til I get comments on Ketsui to do the ESPRade & other ones. Someone might need to walk me through seeding a torrent on Linux though.

Thanks for the stage 3 link, GaijinPunch!

The bittorrent thing is a great idea. I'd love to see a complete replay of this game as well.

Azureus is PC, Mac and Linux compatible, and creating a torrent to upload is very easy, using Azureus' "Create A Torrent" option. All you need is the announce URL to send the file and peer data to, and you're set.

Again, if you wish to upload to the tracker, send me a PM and I'll add your shmups screenname to the DB, granting you upload capability. I'll also give you details of how to create and get a torrent running off my tracker.

I do definitely prefer BT to other P2P apps as the download speed you get is determined by the amount of peers sharing and downloading the file, and not by how fast someone's connection is. Plus, a torrent file is only a few KB, while a replay can be anything up to 750MB in size, or bigger. I no longer have the patience to upload such huge videos to my webserver, no matter how fast my connection is ;)

If you're DVD ripping, I found a slightly better way of doing it. I use DVD Decrypter to rip the .vob files off the DVD, and use either FlaskMPEG or VirtualdubMOD to to frameserve to Virtualdub (not MOD) to run a two-pass XviD encode using my own custom settings.

If you wish, I can upload my VDub encode settings for you to use. If you want some examples of my XviD quality, please grab my Bakraid replays off my ST thread.

Nice Ketsui replay btw. I have a 650MB AVI file I downloaded a long time ago off JigsawMan's FTP, which looks similar to what you have. I think Mode7 had the same file, which he encoded to RealMedia.

I'm sure everyone has the same Ketsui Replay. Mine are just no DVD. I treid Flask, but the way these things are encoded made flasking it kind of hard.... I could never get the audio to work. That is only 1-pass though. I'll try 2 pass tonight when I sleep. The only bad thing is that some things get 'electrofied' if you didn't notice, and they don't look so bad in the DVD.

Since other people have the Ketsui replay (hopefully rotated properly) I won't bother with making a torrent. I'll mess around with the other replays I have though and maybe get those going.

Oh, yeah -- I tried installing Azereus on my Gentoo box, but it's currently masked with the unstable keyword, so I didn't bother. I'll look for a safer method.

i would love to see a good quality video of ketsui, because the one from Namiki (the one a lot of people already have) is just terrible. the colors are all very strange.

but I'm sure it's hard to record well an arcade at 60fps...

Follow the link I posted. Look at that, and tell me if it's better or worse. It's only stage 3... 35 megs or so.

Just checked..
it's a little better but far from perfect. the bakraid movie on another hand is very nice. but i suspect it's coming from an emul then converted to xvid.

the ketsui movie could only come from arcade. and I think that why it's hard to rip an rgb output.

In my experience with digital video, I've noticed there are the two factors that contribute to a high quality encode. The first is good source material, and the second is encoding settings.

If you have good source material to work with, then your resulting output will be of high quality. In this case, my Bakraid stuff is of good quality because the source material I used is a direct videofile output using EK-MAME's AVI capture options. I would suspect that the Ketsui replay that is floating around isn't firsthand source material, but secondhand - an encode of the source capture - or maybe even thirdhand, and that is probably why the replay looks a little... funny.

Secondly, the encoding settings used to create the resulting file affect the output quality. It took me a very long time to create the two-pass XviD encode settings I use now, all done through trial-and-error and comparing the XviD tests with older output I've done using the DivX codec (to try and keep the output quality as close to the source material as possible, without bloating filesize). I would suspect the Ketsui source material I have (and what everyone else has) is of low quality encoding settings, although I would have to check the video bitrate to determine that.

With Ketsui, the source isn't the greatest in the world. It's grainy, but the colors aren't elecftrofied if you will. Then again, I only did single pass. I'll load up another run (2-pass) while I sleep tonight and see if it gets any better.

I have both the 650MB Ketsui and the 350MB Progear no Arashi replays, and they were distributed on featheredwings.net a long long time ago. Maybe if demand is high enough, I'll add them to the Tracker.

I've got the following that I can rip.

Guwange
ESPRade
Battle Garegga

I'll rip one and jump no Icarus' tracker if that's cool with him. Just need feedback on which would be the most wanted.

That's perfectly okay with me. If you want an upload account on the Tracker to distribute any shmup-related materials, just PM me :)

I intended the Tracker to be a publicly available resource for the Shmups community anyway. JigsawMan's FTP was brilliant, but there was always the risk of hackers/breakdown/hammering of the resource, which kind of killed the fun the first time his FTP went down a long time ago. I've been using BitTorrent to get my daily anime fansub fix for a long time now, and figured that it could be useful to have a similar resource for shmups replays/OST distro etc. It also saves on webspace/time wasted waiting for an upload to complete/frustration when an upload is corrupted/etc.

The only thing I ask is that uploaders ask for an upload account (since I haven't got round to making time to hack the registration scripting out of phpBB for use on the Tracker yet), and that no warez/ISO/ROMs or other sensitive stuff be distributed on the Tracker (I don't mind shmup OSTs, since I collect them anyway). Other than that, it's free to use :)

EDIT: oh yeah, before I forget, thank chtimi for uploading the Ketsui torrent ;)
