shmups forum - what exactly have we got here then

Post by malc »

Hi Shmuppers!

welcome to the new forum, which is still in the process of being tidied up and installed so bear with us.

i've had a lot of mails about the forums. Thanks to people who offered to set up forums under their own webspace but I wanted something proper and paid for, fully under my own control, such as it is. Thanks to bloodf for setting the gubbins of the forum up too.

a few topics to discuss:

MODS: please email me at malc@shmups.com and I will set you up again for modding. Give me your registered username please as well. Sorry, I forgot to take a note of all mods emails, duh

DONATIONS: What you say? well while this forum is free to use, it wasnt free to set up and run and if you want to make a paypal donation to me@malks.com you can. This is entirely voluntary though and I'm not asking anyone to fork out money to use the forum.

BACKUPS OF OLD FORUM: We tried to restore the old backups but failed. My backup was incomplete and we're talking about 500MB+ files here. So we're starting afresh. Sorry. New year and all that.

thats all for now, if you spot anything else that isnt working or working properly let me know

Thanks for everything Malc!

Sorry to hear the old files aren't gonna be uploaded (aren't they still on the gamespy server somewhere? Didn't someone else make a rip of all topics etc? Maybe not all is lost, as say for the high-scores and S&T?).

Anyway as for donations: count me in I will sent some funds your way in a few days. You might wanna add a donation button on the site somewhere to show people the way if they feel like donating!?

Great to have a "home" again! :D

Cheers Malc,

You mentioned Bloodflowers and his input. Well just as a coincidence, I met Bloodflowers for the first time this evening in Casino playing Mush. Very nice Guy!

All the Best,

It's good to see some forums back up. About donations, I'm pretty poor right now but I'll gladly contribute when I have some extra cash.

I archived the oldest 103 threads (up to February 09, 2004) in the Hardware Forum, but I didn't get a chance to do the rest. I do remember some of the information from discussions I didn't back-up.
I also have... 8 from the Strategy Forum. I wish I had saved more.

Thanks so much for all of your hard work, Malc! I know I'm not the most active poster, but I do appreciate having this forum, even if it is just to lurk most of the time.

Three cheers for Malc!!!

Hip hip Hooray!

Hip hip....oh, you get the point.....

Erm...so! Back to Super Star Soldier, then. 8)

actually I didnt do very much - it was bloodflowers who did most of it, especially the backend setting up work which I'm scared of - the reason that I didnt do anything about a new forum for ages :)

Anyway its looking pretty smart now and very shmuppy I think eh! Now just to sit back and let it get filled up with posts again hopefully!!

Big thanks to both malc and bloodflowers for putting together a new forum. 8)

It is really too bad about the loss of data from the old one, but I'm hoping that some of the more important material (such as strategy guides) have been saved by people and can gradually be restored to some degree.

This is a really nitpicky request so feel free to ignore me, but I did rather like the old forum not creating a new page every 15 replies. :P

Not to just echo what everyone else is saying, but thanks Malc for setting up this new page, it looks great!

I'm glad to see this new forum up and running and I would like to contribute donations to keep this forum alive.

...But do you know what this means? We can't beat up on newbies for bringing up old topics! We'll have to discuss the same old topics such as:

"What are all the shmups on the Dreamcast?"

"Which Thunderforce V is better: Playstation or Saturn?"

or,

"Help! I think my Saturn is haunted by ghosts! When I put in Souky, the text is all garbled up! Anyone know any good priests?"

i know this is getting redundant, but big thanks to malc, bloodflowers, and everyone else for getting the new version of the forum up and running. hopefully we can start afresh in the new year, with minimal trolling and thread derailing.

well, i can at least hope that i won't ever see a topic degenerate into a DC vs. [?] argument again

in any case, it's good to be back.

Wow, I like the new look... it's gorgeous!

with all these stars on background and neon-blue color windows, it kinda reminds me of Gradius V.

Anyway, it's good too see it fully operative!

god damn it! it was an accident! a misunderstanding! :P

If you can give a way other than paypal I could help out a bit, and I'm not just saying that as an excuse to not donate.

Sweetness.

Edit: Forgot to say thanks.

Edit #2: I know it's not much, but I can back up the posts and shit that some of the members have posted on my temporary phpBB forums. It's only 300-500 KB and send it to you if you want. Just a thought...

Excellent work, thanks guys. Shame about the lost posts, though - there was some mighty good stuff in S&T and High-scores. My Fren-zE S&T and XII Stag high-score threads, especially. And I was 10 posts away from hitting 1000, too. Not that the latter matters any.

Oh well, fresh start for the new years.

I want to thank everyone who made this possible.

It looks absolutely gorgeous. I really like the addiction of the starfield as the background. Thanks again!

It's nice that we're back, but I just feel we've lost a lot of the soul.

But at least we're away from the clutches of IGN/Gamespy. Oh and nice BG.

Well, we're still re-building the community, I think. Not all of the regulars have joined the new forums yet and the empty Strategy and High-score sections contribute to that feeling as well. Once we get back into groove it'll be like before, for the most part.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Can you retrieve any of the STs?I'm trying to contact Twystneko (who should have some of them on his site, which is luckily down!), but in case you have something, it would helpful...

EDIT:

Malc, can you retrieve the two stickies that were in the strategy section and their content? If so, i may check how to get back the STs (i hope).
