Image Fight 2, recommended?

Post by No_not_like_Quake »

I'm quite a big fan of Image Fight with it's difficulty and all and have heard both good and bad things about it's PC Engine CD sequel. I'm intrested in picking it up. Is it worth my while, as I have limited funds?

I recall Icarus saying that this version is chopped pretty badly. An already difficult game becomes extra frustrating because of the bad conversion. Too bad there isn't a tate version available, as there is for Image Fight on PS1 and Saturn.

There's a lot of confusion about this, but Image Fight II is not a conversion, it's an exclusive game released for PC-Engine only!

EDIT: As for the game. It's not very good, and kind of expensive, so you'll probably feel ripped off. Get Spriggan instead! :)

Agreed, Image Fight 2 is not so hot. Spriggan is good alternative, but I also suggest trying out Super Raiden too. It's even cheaper than Spriggan and the conversion is second to the Raiden Project. Also boast 2 extra stages not found in the arcade.

Image Fight II is not great, but it surely is nowhere near as bad as malc's review on shmups.com makes it sound. While it certainly is pretty difficult, I made it far beyond the place where malc got stuck on my second or third try (and I'm not a fantastic player). Last but not least, it's a PCE-exclusive Irem shmup. Nice to have but not essential. I'd rate it 6.5 out of 10. You should try before you buy.

Rolins is right--Spriggan is a much better game, and Super Raiden is no slouch. Image Fight 2 bored me a bit. You might want to consider Gates of Thunder, too. I do believe its the best CD shooter on the PCE.

i was going to post to say IF2 is PCE only but i checked klov to be sure and it seems they're confused about it too http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?let ... me_id=8182

it's an ok game, not a patch on the original IMO.

You're in luck. Right here:

IF2 was PCE-CD only I believe. Stick with IF though, as its far better to play.

The listing in KLOV is wrong. IF2 was never an arcade game.

If you need more convincing, check this,
http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id ... =3426#3426

or the Japanese Wiki entry on Image Fight, which makes it a point of saying that it was PCE-only.

Image Fight II is awesome. I can see why many won't like it because it forces memorization due to the horizontal screen not giving you enough time to really anticipate anything you haven't encountered. However, you have a way of escaping from most situations (unlike, say, Legion, where wrong positioning leaves you instantly dead with no escape). You've got to give Irem credit for expecting players to move in certain ways and having ships move right to where the player will get hit.

Image Fight II has a bit more variety over the original as well with actually interesting boss patterns in addition to add-on power-ups (along with the trusty 'ol straight and reverse options from the first game). Spriggan is long, easy (I 1CC'ed it in a week), animation-laden, and sorta boring at times (in line with the Aleste games); still a great title, but not really comparable to Image Fight II (sorta like comparing R-Type to Thunder Force).

Image Fight 2 is quite frustrating, but back in the days when the only Japanese games I had were IF2 and Psychic Storm, I endured through IF2 (thanks to infinite continues) and found myself having fun. It has good graphics, and a big feeling of repetition and memorization... but in a fun way.

Maybe that's just me.

Sounds like a great game, and it's one that I've been wanting to see some footage of for quite some time.

Damn it. I was so hoping to get an Image Fight 2 PCB. I've been looking for a while...guess that's why I can't find it :D

When I first got IF2 for the PCE, my buddy and I spent something like 9 hours playing it and got to level 7 or 8. It's BRUTALLY hard but it's a great shmup. It's not on the same level as, say, Rayzanber II of course, but it's rough. If your kill ratio is too low, you get sent to HARDER levels of difficulty, just like the first Image Fight. Essentially punishment levels for being a poor player. But it's a great game...easily in my top ten shmups for the PCE.

Ultimately if you're a big fan of the first one, you'll like the second one. I think if you hate one, you'll hate both and vica versa. Spriggan is good too as people have said, but there's something to be said for the brutality inherent in the Image Fight games. They're really a masochist's shmups :)

Thanks for the replies.

I've decided to get it... a little later. It's quite expensive. I'm going for something cheaper right now, maybe Spriggan if I can find it fairly cheap. I'm craving some PC-Engine CD shmupness.

I enjoyed it more than R-Type III at least, as far as 16-bit IREM console titles go. Not as good as the original though.

I'm pretty sure ImageFight II is a better game than the PC Engine port of the original, which is hilariously jank. It's also not as utterly brutal as the arcade version of the original. Definitely worth playing at least for a bit.
