Someone on Gamefaqs recommended Enclave, but I read a review of Enclave that claims that it has awkward controls and plenty of cheap deaths.

Want to know what game is extremely close to Drakan's seamless blend of on-foot and aerial gameplay on vast mountainous levels? :) Lucasarts' Mercenaries.

OK, it may be a political action setting in North Korea, but the way you attack from the air, can easily park your helicopter then continue fighting on-foot is surprisingly just like Drakan's dragon-riding gameplay mechanic. And the way you gain more powerful airstrikes as you progress is sort of like leveling up magic spells.

Enclave is an underappreciated marvel, imo. But it's less like Drakan and more like a cross between Quake 1 and Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance. It doesn't have cheap deaths, anyone who plays shmups shouldn't have a problem with Enclave's difficulty. Wait until you unlock the Dark Campaign... amazing.

Wow, thanks TF! Mercenaries does indeed look pretty similar to Drakan!

One more question about Enclave-I've also read about problems with the controls; are they pretty bad?

Enclave's controls and camera are possibly my favorite of any 3rd person action game. Viewed from behind in 3rd person, with aiming done FPS style (dual-analog), with a pixel precise targetting cursor that also changes to reflect the accuracy of your aim with a crossbow. And it has a "smart camera" system, so when your view is blocked by an obstruction it instantly zooms in to a first-person view for a few seconds until the camera has room to return to 3rd person view again.

The best part of this game however, is the atmosphere, characters, and vast imaginative level designs. Detailed cabins in remote woodland locations, with clear mountain streams flowing by... fantastic magical towers full of beasts and traps...

Sadly the game didn't appeal to the masses so the sequel which was already halfway through development was cancelled

Yeah, I saw that the sequel was cancelled on Gamefaqs. Well, thanks again for the great recommendations! :D
