Modding Saturn Pad for Supergun/Neo Geo use

Post by CIT »

I was wondering if this is possible, recommendable, and if so, if anybody has done it?

Is it just a matter of soldering the cables to the appropriate buttons, or is it not that simple?

Sorry if this question is overly retarded, but I have no technical ability whatsoever.

Here's one I made.

Pictures are of the first version, only A-B-C+Start buttons are used, but the original cable can be left in place. I just removed the IC and bridged the button traces to the cable connector. At the other end, chop off the head and stick on your own DB-15 connector, noting the colour coding. There are only 9 cores on the original cable, hence only being able to support 3 buttons + start.

I later replaced the cable with one that had 10 cores, so I was able to support A-B-C-D+Start. To do this, I de-soldered the 9-pin attachment to the PCB, and put the 9 insulated cores of the cable through the vacant holes. The bare core was used as ground and I just soldered to to the common ground on one of the shoulder buttons.

It's not a hard mod, just time consuming to do it cleanly.

I have a pair of 3rd party Kiki gamepads for Supergun

Back when the Shmups.com forum was still up, I had Matt rig up a pair of 3rd party Sega Saturn game pads from Kiki and added with auto-fire switches for buttons A, B, & C. They're pretty good gamepads...especially with auto-fire capabilities to save "wear 'n' tear" on the hands. ^_~

I like the fact that one can use these Kiki gamepads on a MVS MV-1 mobo directly to try out games going with that setup.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
