How do i start shmupping on my laptops?

ok im new to this so here goes.....

for the past week ive done some research on the internet, i believe its free n legal to emulate 'mame' on the pc, so ive downloaded 3 different emulators n loads of game but funny thing is, they dont seem to be working.....

could any of the members please guide me to the right direction, im not very smart with computers so i need some step-by-step informations, any links would be great.....

PS: im using second hand laptops so do i need to upgrade any hardware? ie: graphics card!

I recommend using mame32 or mame32plus(this is more recommended because takes less memory but loads longer)

No need to upgrade your graphics card, Mame won't use it anyway.

As for a step-by-step guide, check out the FAQ at www.mame.net for most answers.

ok first things first.....
i have mame32v108b, mame090b, mame 090b_dos and games from romnation (i know theres other places for more roms but its just the start). ok this what i did, the roms are in the roms folder, ive open mame32, then open the mame32.exe application, ive audit the games on available, i double click on one of the games..... nothing happens

im sure im missing something here (files, softwares, etc.....)!
i would like to know, whos using what and how?

Here's a step by step guide:

1: Go to your favourite rom site
2: Download your rom into the roms folder (DO NOT UNZIP THEM!!!!)
3: Load up MAME32 (If you're unfamiliar with DOS then use MAME32 because it's easier to use)
4: Click the "Available" tab on the side
5: Press F5

The roms in your "roms" folder should then appear once loading is complete. If the little box next to the mame games are green then they're properly loaded and work fine.

wierd! thats what ive done, but i will use your method as soon as my laptop is running (been acting funny for some funny reason

) , n hopefully it works how you say it does.....

(keeping my fingers crossed).
after that, what exactly suppose to happen? ie: black screen, rom loading, games starts.....

LOL.....

many thanks to the SHMUPS members who have replied to my post/problem, i just got a game started and im thrilled.....

(i guess its easy when you know how, but its hard when you know nothing) and this is only the beginning.....

i hope i can count on you guys (again) if i have any problems (not) in the future.....

ps: i had my roms in the wrong roms folder.....
