DC shmups in the order of "must have" to "no

Post by neorichieb1971 »

I guess this can be applied to everyone and not me personally.

I currently have Under Defeat and Shiki 2, I might have Gigawing. But I'd probably want them all.

My local importer has Chaos Field, Trizeal, Psyvariar 2 and Ikaruga. So I will pick them up next.

If 2 games are very similar, I'd just want the best one of the two.

I had Gunbird 2 and sold it, probably because I didnt have a joystick and the pad was lame.. Then I got a joystick :?

So as there are only a 2 handfuls of shmups on the DC, what would you consider the order of must haves > No thank you.

I would prioritize VGA compatibles over non compatibles.

So what we got -

Border down VGA
Ikaruga VGA
Gunbird 2 ?
Mars Matrix ?
Gigawing 1 and 2 ?
Trizeal VGA
Radilgy VGA
Under defeat VGA
Chaos Field VGA
Shiki 2 VGA
Psyvariar 2 VGA

Thanks

Your list is broken.

No Zero Gunner 2.

My list would go like this:

Ikaruga VGA
Zero Gunner 2 ?
Under Defeat VGA
Bangai-O ?
Mars Matrix ?
Psyvariar 2 VGA
Cannon Spike ?
Border Down VGA (So shoot me I never played this game)
Twinkle Star Sprites ?
Trizeal VGA
Shiki 2 VGA (Get PS2)
Chaos Field VGA
Gunbird 2 ?
Radilgy VGA
Gigawing 1 and 2 ?

You may have forgotten to mention: Twinkle Star Sprites, Zero Gunner 2, Cannon Spike, Bangai-o

Most loved: Mars Matrix, Shiki II, Giga Wing 1 & 2, Gunbird 2, Under Defeat, Border Down, Zero Gunner 2

Next best: Ikaruga, Trizeal, Radilgy, Psyvariar 2, Twinkle Star Sprites, Bangai-o

Last place: Chaos Field (the only one I don't have)

I still haven't gotten around to trying Cannon Spike. I expect it to be quite good.

My list is similar to yours, except I'd swap Trizeal and Radirgy into the "most loved" category. I'd put Border Down (don't own it yet) and ZG2 into "next best".

Chaos Field definitely belongs in last place. No matter how much I tried to love it, there's just something tainted about that whole experience.

Yeah, Shiki's a good game. Somewhat high degree of replayability due to all the characters you can choose. Later levels are full of bullet hell joy guaranteed to keep you on your toes.

Just be sure you're using controller 1 with a near empty VMU in order to save your progress, as I so eloquently discovered.

Chaos Field is quite cool, thank you!

@NeoRichie: either you love or you hate Chaos Field! Don't let the naysayers persuade you into not even trying it. It's got a killer soundtrack in ANY case! :)

Only problem on DC is the lack of score saving, otherwise it gets my thumbs up!

The Chaos Field Soundtrack is one of the best I've listened to in a whole while, especially the Main Title. But the game is not really my favourite on the DC. :(

My list:

MUST-HAVES
Ikaruga
Under Defeat
Gunbird 2

GOOD-TO-HAVES
Shiki 2
Radilgy
Chaos Field
Mars Matrix
Zero Gunner 2

REST
Rest

Err, yeah.

Ha. Nice attempt at disguising another of those "What are the best shooters for DC/SAT/PSX?" thread. You can't fool the discerning eye of Specineff, master of justice, oddity and everything edible that can be wrapped around a tortilla and covered in lettuce, tomato and onion.

The weakest DC shmup is Armada. Talk about a rushed, incomplete and unbalanced game... well, it's not a pure shmup, actually, it's more like a mix of Asteroids and a multiplayer RPG.

4. Border Down VGA
5. Zero Gunner 2 VGA
6. Radirgy VGA

Both Giga Wings and Twinkle Star Sprites are also VGA compatible. The only two shmups that aren't VGA compatible are Bangaioh and Gunbird 2.

I was about to give my list and then I got the urge to play Border Down, which led to Under Defeat and then Zero Gunner 2 and then Chaos Field and then........... That was 3 hours ago.

Get them all.

Is this true even if you play CF on a Jap DC?

Yes. The save file is only 2k. All it saves are your game-settings.

Umh, no? Armada was hella fun multiplayer. I'm not sure that I'd call it a shooter though, it's much closer to "Diablo In Space". The worst DC shooter is (without a doubt) Bangaio .

Opinions are like assholes

Considering the DC as an island, I'd say something like...

Tops
-------------
Under Defeat
Psyvariar 2
Ikaruga

Excellent
-------------
Border Down
Zero Gunner 2
Trizeal
Radirgy
Mars Matrix
Cannon Spike

Okay
-------------
Giga Wing
Chaos Field
Shikigami no Shiro 2

Non-VGA
-------------
Bangai-O
Gunbird 2

Shikigami no Shiro 2
Mars Matrix
Border Down
Bangaioh
Gunbird 2
Zero Gunner 2
Psyvariar 2
Giga Wing
Twinkle Star Sprites
Giga Wing 2
Radirgy
Trizeal
Chaos Field
_____

WORST

The DC doesn't have a lot of shmups but most of them are really excellent. The only one I would also agree on that really isn't worth getting is Chaos Field, but then, you'd be one game short on the collection.

(Looking forward to being able to add Last Hope in there somewhere as well, sometime soon..?)

is trizeal actually any good? it looked awful from what I saw...
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Well as you can see from my list, it's my second to last on the DC. I'd say it's still worth having, if you can find it for a good price. It plays reasonably, but if you really care about production values (such as high quality graphics and presentation) you may be disappointed.

It looks awful, but plays very well. If you're in solely for the gameplay, Trizeal is a quality shooter. I prefer it to many other entries in the DC shmup library.
