Your favorite videogame noises?
This is kinda of a weird topic, but we all know videogames have some memoriable sound effects. Of course, today's games don't have as many "gamey" sounds because they have powerful enough hardware to play realistic sound clips, but if you like those, feel free to list them.
Here's the sounds that I like off the top of my head:
The Insert Credit noise on old Atari games like Stun Runner. Such a haunting and cool little bong.
The growing sound from Mario games, actually, I like all of the noises in Super Mario Bros.
Dropping a nuke in Raiden I & II. Makes me feel powerful when I hear the bomb fall and the resulting explosion.
The "squish" sound effect in Duke Nukem 3D. Yeah, it's a little sick, but it's a satisifing noise when you gibbed someone, not to mention the funny quip Duke sometimes makes afterwards. Runner up is the gib noise from Doom.
That stupid little "you got an item!" jingle in countless Zelda games.

Shmups: It's all about blowing stuff up!
This one particular agonizing scream from Golden Axe - "aughiieoOHHGOOOODDDDDD!!!!"
Classic.
- the wierd thumping sound you get in Golden Axe when you smack a skeleton on the head
- anything said by the voice over guy in Garegga
- the sound when you collect a medal in Garegga
- "Welcome to your doom!" from Altered Beast
- the noise that's made when you punch one of those tombstone things in Altered Beast
- the spring noise from Sonic the Hedgehog
- the napalm sound from Viper - Phase 1
- anything said by the voice over chick from Blazing Star. "Bonus!"
- Heavy Machine Gun.

Godzilla was an inside job
Well, my favorite videogame screams are the ones from Metal Slug (espeically the ones when you roast the soliders with a Flame Shot!) and the ones from the Classic Command & Conquer.circuitface wrote:This one particular agonizing scream from Golden Axe - "aughiieoOHHGOOOODDDDDD!!!!"

I like a lot of the sounds in Doom.. very good sound effects, IMO.
Zelda: OT has very good sound effects, too (Menu, Link sounds).
As far as a shmup...
hmm... I'd say pretty much any Compile game... a lot of their weapons have sound effects that I would say match perfectly with the type of weapon used. Excellent work!

Hmmm...
-The big explosion sounds on Raiden 2
-The coin collect sound from Magic Sword
-The warp sound at the end of a level on Time Pilot
-a lot of the sound effects from Moon Patrol
-The breaking glass sound used in Point Blank games
-Not a video game sound, but the "you lose" horns from The Price is Right for some reason. Probably too much time on YTMND...

All nice choices people. Glad to see that I'm not the only one who thinks sound is one of the most important ascepts of a videogame!
I also like the sound effects made in Raizing shmups, like the weird "crunch" sound enemies make when you shoot them and the Mahou style bombs.

Something else that should be mentioned (although not exactly in the videogame category) is that Williams Pinball machines (especially in the WPC era) had some excellent sound to them. On games like F-14 Tomcat, Black Knight 2000, Getaway, Twilight Zone, Attack from Mars and Medieval Madness the sound design was a significant part of what made the games so memorable. Probably the best machine I ever had the privilege of playing was in what used to be the local shmup hangout before it got turned into a smoothie bar. It was a Twilight Zone in incredibly good shape, set on a quarter a play with the volume cranked. I swear, if you hit the multiball jackpot on that thing they'd hear it all the way over at Target on the other side of the mall.
And I'm sure any pinball junkie would tell you their favorite sound is the replay knocker...

The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Nice thread, FatCobra!
-Giga Wing: When the Reflect Force is ready. I don't know what it says, sounds like "forté".
-Capcom insert credit (SF2..).
-The old Konami pause sound.
-Gofer no Yabou Episode II (MSX): In the second stage, there appear these shots that stop at one point and then grow random "cells" in various directions. The growing sound is nice, but when you shoot these "cells" it's even better.
-Altered Beast: The sine-wave type sound when the hologram appears in the end of a stage.
-The "IBARA" sound.. I have this as an sms sound in my cell phone, but sometimes it scares the bejesus out of me. Gotta find some nice shmup wav to replace this beast.
-R-Type series: The sound of a fully loaded wave cannon.
-Ninja Warriors: "please don't kill me!".

Before Pope John Paul died he decreed that Aliens were also GOD's creatures and we should treat them with respect.

Vampire savior series, insert cedit.
Capcom Street fighter home version menu noises when you press up or down: "tun"
When you select a menu item: "blowadjowap" (say it real fast)
Offcourse "BOMBER!" from DoDonPachi when you collect a smart bomb.
"PRESENTED BY CAVE" The way he says the word Cave, it's said a bit sad, like he chewed on his tongue when he said it.

I love a couple of sounds from Alex Kidd in Miracle World: The jump, the punch, and especially the sound the hands make when the Janken game is resolved.
I also like the coin sound and the sound a projectile makes when it hits your shield from Wonderboy in Monsterland.
Others:
- the 1up sound from SMB. I have a keychain that plays this. I have it here at work and push the button whenever I feel I could use an extra life.
- "Let's go already" from Waluigi in Mario Kart DS. Speaking of that, most of the character sounds in MKDS are awesome.
