The official Wolf Fang love-in thread!!....

Post by dave4shmups »

Just got this game today, through a trade, and after playing it for a while on my modded PS1, I LOVE it! :D :D

The sprite-based graphics are gorgeous, particularly one stage with snow-capped mountains! Mech customization is extremely user-friendly, and requires no knowledge of Japanese. The music is great, particularly in Arcade mode; and having Playstation mode (I would assume Saturn mode is roughly the same on the Saturn) available as well ads a lot of replay value to this shmup! The weapons are great, too! You get a special bomb type weapon which recharges, and the main weapons are great as well-there's a spead vulcan shot, not unlike that found in Vaport Trail, a shell shot (think 1943), a cool laser weapon, and then this green colored weapon which seesm to eat bullets. If you have a Saturn or PS1, and love mech shmups, or like Data East's shmups in general, then I highly recommend Wolf Fang!

I do have some questions about the level progression, though-after the first two stages, you can choose from stages in New Zealand or Austrailia-how many different endings are there? Also, the manual lists like 41 different mech customizations, but I don't see how that's possible with this game.

I didn't spend much time with this game because it wasn't my cup of tea, but I don't think it's a shmup, properly speaking. At any rate, in the levels I played your character was on the ground like in a platformer.

Moved to OT. I've had the PSX version for a long while but never got excited about it. Kinda meh, though the ability to configure your mech is nice.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

The wonders of copy and paste:

Wow, you finally got this game after like 3 years, huh? Yeah, I much prefer the arcade's soundtrack over the arrange version as well. I don't think the controls are very intuitive though, which may bother some people. Anyway, there's 4 endings to the game.

I don't have a problem with the controls, and yeah, I finally got it! Thanks for the info on the endings to the game. Seems like the Saturn version is the worst in this case, because I have not seen any slowdown.

Probably because it's the obscure sequel to the mediocre Vapor Trail.

It's closer to a Chelnov sequel set in the Vapor Trail universe.

And lol @ OT diss.

It's actually a rather cool game, it's funny that most of the places depicted in the game show non-existing backgrounds and locations :) One trick: if you use the electro-charge (or whatever it is), even the level one discharge will cancel bullets, extremely useful as a "last defense". In Mame you can also check the EU version, which makes you play all levels, without split paths.

Wow. I'm interested. I thought this game had been classified as mediocre, but clearly it isn't. Thanks for the heads up, Dave.

Vapor Trail -> Skull Fang -> Wolf Fang

I believe that's how the series went. Not quite sure how the second and third are related, the first two are fairly obvious (and indeed the SF Saturn port has various unused music tracks on the disc, one of which is a remix of the VT boss theme).

Wolf Fang is from '91 and Skull Fang from '96.

Wolf Fang was such a fun game. Own a complete PSX version, and happy with it.

I played Skull Fang for the Saturn and Jesus it slowdowns a lot. The same day I got it in the mail was the same day I sold it.

Special Mode in PSX Version?

Post by BIL »

Thought I'd ask this here, rather than starting a new thread.

Am I correct in thinking the PSX version lacks the arcade's "Special Mode?" (insert coin, then hold shot+subweapon and press start for twelve rather than six stages). I've looked around the PSX's options and tried a few button combinations, with no luck.

This game has a sentimental meaning to me - it was the first PCB I bought. It was selling locally for next to nothing, and I wanted something cheap to test out a supergun I was planning on building.

For a few weeks, it was the only game I had to play in my cab.

It's fun, but can't rival a good shooter (45 degree aiming options are limiting), and I prefer the metal slug games to this.

My board is the International version - no story mode, just 12 levels.

Heh, I'd love to find this board cheap. It's an okay game, not one of Data East's top tier though IMHO. Close though.
