please please help I am going crazy

Post by withnail6969 »

Please help me I.D an old arcade classic. I used to love this game. You (i'm pretty sure) are a space ship at the bottom of the screen with planes and/or spaceships coming at you. This is a vert scroller. There are also tanks that come into it along the ground and they can come onto the screen from below you or from the sides of the screen. They are proper looking tanks and travel along what looks to be a proper tarmaced road. Once they enter the screen their guns turn to face you. As well as a gun you can drop bombs on the tanks and the strange kind of turrents that appear for a second at a time and fire a missile at you. There were great power ups in this game. Any help id-ing it would make me very happy. thanks in advance. PS:- its not tiger heli, xenon, flying shark or flying tiger. Its very similar to raiden only the graphics are much much better with good use of the drop shadow. Also the most unique thing I remember about this game is the shield feature. You can pick up shield power ups and they allow you to be hit a few times before you die. There are big bosses at the end of each level and I think maybe some aircraft carriers. Any help gratefully appreciated

Could be anything, tanks says World war 2 theme to me but space ship?

Has anyone played a Vert where your a space ship?

Never seens shields in a vert, thats got to be unique because i've played about 25 verts and never once seen a space ship or a shield.

Did you play this on a console or arcade?

And welcome to the forums

Thanks for the welcome fella. I know what you mean about the tank thing being military. Perhaps it was a plane. The reason why I thought it was a spaceship was cause of the pretty cool powerups. I've just been looking at raiden fighters and its not that. Although there is a specific armoured vehicle in the first raider than appears in the game I am after. The shield thing I am certain about. Also I remember after you die you have a few seconds to pick up the powerups you had collected before they disappear. Me and a colleague are sure that we played this at the arcade. Could be anything from 1990-1996 I guess but the graphics were really crisp.

Vapor Trail?

A megadrive conversion exists, that is the only one AFAIK. Or is there a X68000 version too?
What was the prize again for guessing the right answer?

I would probably paypal the right answer $10 at least. Its driving me mad. Good call on vapor trail. The differences between that and the game I am after is that in my game the tanks come onto the screen MUCH MUCH slower . The speed of my game is like raiden. I have also remembered these little pyramids in the ground that appeared in clusters of about 4-8 and they would open up and fire something at you. I think you had to bomb these. You could shoot the tanks though you didn't have to bomb them

The pyramids that shoot at you sound like sky captain from the nes, but it is definetaly not what your looking for, way to early to be 1996 era.

How about Air Attack by Comad or Air Gallet by Banpresto/Gazelle both are 1996 both have the tanks, but in Air Gallet the turrents follow you. Though it is a plane you fly.

My best pick would have to be Hotdog Storm by Marble which is 1996 and has the power you can pick up when you come back after getting hit. Also you fly a spaceship and the tanks move fast.

Raiden II?
Raiden DX?
Grindstormer?
Daisenpu/Twin Hawk?
V-V (V-Five)?

I'm having a hard time thinking of shooters with shields...

BTW, why'd you try Metal Slug?

The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I know what you mean. Thats whats seems to be baffling people is the shield factor. This game may possibly have drawn a circle (force field around you when you got hit. ) to show that you had taken a hit and lost a point off your shield. When all your shield was gone the next hit you took took one of your lives. Whats baffling me is that this game was everywhere at the time I just can't place the time. Something in the back of my mind tells me this game was capcom. I don't know why but I can picture their kind of graphics. I could be completely wrong though. Someone suggested metal slug and at this stage I will try anything.

Have just tried air gallet and you don't drop bombs in that. In my game you have a button to shoot and another to drop bombs. Where the bombs landed was kinda left to your judgement. You didn't have a target for the bombs like in some other games

What about the shield? Was the shield triggered automatically after picking up the power-up? In that case I´d think Grindstormer.

Post by withnail6969 »

can't find a grindstormer that works. How come you can't post attachments on this forum? Here is an updated list eliminated games

Aero fighters
1942
1943
19xx
batsugun special version
fighting hawk
fire shark
Flying shark
Flying tiger
metal slug
metal slug II
parodius
phoenix
r-type
raiden (although this is the most similar out of all of them.)
raiden fighters
slap fight (this is also very similar. Imagine this with sharper graphics and more modern!!!)
strikers 1945
strikers 1945 II
strikers 1945 III
Vapor trail
varth (this is also very similar.)
xenon
xevious
zaxxon

I FEEL I AM GETTING NEARER. I am looking for a cross between VARTH, RAIDEN and SLAP FIGHT. I am now pretty certain your ship is a very flash aircraft. You don't get to choose the aircraft at the start of the game and you do get stage complete messages after defeating end of level bosses. I must emphasize the fact that when there are tanks on the screen they do move very slowly. They will usually appear on the screen 3 at a time as well

Grindstorm and V-Five are basically the same game (They just have different weapons system). If you can't find a working Grindstorm, look for V-Five

it's not v-five.
Right I have taken a screen shot of raiden because the two missile launching things you can see in the picture are extremely similar to the ones in my game. I guess thats why i need to eliminate raiden 2 and raiden dx but I can't find working roms :(

Techincally, it is. But some of these games are 10 or more years old and I don't think you're going to get in trouble for downloading an old game no-one's heard of or a game that was made by a company that no longer exists. If nothing else, you're "trying before you're buying."

And I can't find a working Raiden II rom either....
